Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

Paladins who swear the Oath of Penitence devote themselves to a path of self-sacrifice and redemption through enduring pain and suffering. They believe that by embracing their own suffering, they can purify themselves and become beacons of hope and inspiration to others.

Tenets of Penitence

The Oath of Penitence emphasizes the following tenets:

Endure Self-Sacrifice: Embrace self-inflicted pain and suffering as a means of atonement for past sins.

Inspire Through Sacrifice: Lead by example, showing others the power of self-discipline and resilience in the face of adversity.

Protect the Vulnerable: Shield those who cannot protect themselves, using your own strength to bear their burdens.

Seek Redemption: Strive to overcome past mistakes and earn forgiveness through acts of selflessness and service.

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options:

Penitent Strike: As a bonus action, you can imbue your weapon with divine energy, causing it to inflict additional damage equal to your Paladin level on your next successful weapon attack. However, immediately after making this attack, you must inflict a wound upon yourself, taking slashing, piercing, or bludgeoning damage equal to your Paladin level.

Sacrificial Shield: As a reaction when a creature within 30 feet of you takes damage, you can transfer some of that damage to yourself. You take damage equal to half of the damage the target would have taken, and the target takes the remaining damage. This feature cannot reduce the damage you take below 1 hit point.

Atonement's Resilience

Starting at 7th level, your dedication to self-sacrifice grants you resilience against harm. You gain resistance to all damage types, except psychic damage. Additionally, whenever you take damage, you can choose to reduce the damage taken by an amount equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1).

Aura of Repentance

Beginning at 15th level, you emanate an aura of repentance, inspiring those around you to strive for redemption. Allies within 10 feet of you gain temporary hit points equal to your Paladin level at the start of their turn. Additionally, any enemy that starts its turn within this aura has disadvantage on attack rolls against creatures other than you until the start of your next turn.

Exemplar of Atonement

At 20th level, you embody the pinnacle of self-sacrifice and redemption. As an action, you can enter a state of divine fervor, gaining the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • You gain advantage on all attack rolls.
  • Whenever you deal damage with a weapon attack, you regain hit points equal to half the damage dealt.
  • Allies within 30 feet of you gain advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
