Base Class: Rogue
What if a Rogue were an investigator but less inquisitive? More Sherlock Holmes in style? Well then they'd be a Detective!
Spontaneity
At 3rd level, you can swiftly make use of your intellect to improve your chances of success. Whenever you are asked to make a saving throw, ability check, or attack roll you can add a spontaneity die to the roll. You can use the die after you have rolled your d20, but before the DM determines the results.
Once the die is used, it is lost. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier (to a minimum of 1). You regain any expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Your spontaneity die is a d6, and changes when you reach certain levels in Rogue: the die becomes a d8 at 5th level, a d10 at 11th level, and a d12 at 17th level.
Deduce
Beginning at 3rd level, you can read a creature like a book, learning just how to beat it. Choose a creature within 60 feet of you. You may use a Bonus Action to gain the following benefits against the creature while it is studied by you:
- You can make an Intelligence (Investigation) check contested by your deduced target's Wisdom (Insight) check. On a success, you learn one of the following about the target creature:
- Highest ability score
- Lowest ability score
- Creature type
- Resistances
- Whenever you successfully hit your deduced target with a weapon attack, choose an allied creature within 120 feet of you that can see and hear you. That creature has advantage on its next attack roll against your deduced target if it is made before the start of your next turn.
These benefits cease if your deduced target has 0 hit points, or you are reduced to 0 hit points. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of 1). You regain all expended uses after completing a long rest.
Commune With City
Beginning at 9th level, you can investigate an urban environment, picking up information from lowlifes and nobles alike. By spending 1 hour carousing an urban environment, you can attempt to learn pertinent information. You can choose to look up any of the following:
- The location of a person of interest within the city.
- The locations of all inns within the city, and their respective owners and reputations.
- Recent rumors and gossip not spoken aloud within the city.
- Leads on recent crime activity or crime organizations within the city.
- The city's center(s) of power, and any high ranking organizations.
When looking for one source of information, you must succeed on an Intelligence (Investigation) check with a DC of 10. For every other piece of information you search for, the DC increases by 5.
Your GM may allow you to search for other investigations; regardless each one still follows the same rules.
Sense Motive
Starting at 13th level, you can use the sheer power of your brain to detect the thoughts of others by reading facial expressions and mannerisms. This functions as if casting the Detect Thoughts spell, using your Intelligence as your spellcasting ability. You may use the feature at will.
Exposure
Beginning at 17th level, you can find the weakness of your deduced target, capitalizing on it to detrimental proportions.
Whenever you deal damage to your deduced target, you can choose to use your reaction to mark that target for an ally. Choose an ally within 120 feet of you. The next time that ally makes an attack against the creature within the next minute, if they are successful it is a critical hit.
Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again.
