Base Class: Sorcerer
The Chronomantic Scholar is a distinctive subclass of sorcerer, defined by their profound connection to the enigmatic forces of time and the underlying mechanisms of the universe. These individuals often start their journey as secluded scholars or curious arcanists who stumble upon long-lost scrolls or ancient tomes filled with arcane knowledge and forgotten spells that grant them the ability to manipulate time itself.
As Chronomantic Scholars, these sorcerers become custodians of temporal magic, viewing the flow of events as a vast, intricate tapestry. Their unique perspective allows them to perceive the interconnectedness of past, present, and future, and they undertake the responsibility of maintaining the balance and order of the cosmos through careful manipulation of these temporal threads.
In their quest for knowledge and control over time, Chronomantic Scholars develop an unparalleled strategic mindset. They are not just reactive, responding to threats as they appear; instead, they are profoundly proactive, often foreseeing potential outcomes and meticulously planning several steps ahead. This foresight is not limited to combat scenarios. It permeates all aspects of their lives, influencing complex decision-making processes and long-term planning in personal endeavors, diplomatic relations, and arcane research.
The practice of chronomancy by these scholars is not merely about power—it is an art form, and a philosophy that requires wisdom, discipline, and a deep ethical understanding of one’s actions. Chronomantic Scholars are known for their meticulous nature and an almost obsessive attention to detail, which is necessary when one holds the delicate strands of time in their hands.
For those who witness a Chronomantic Scholar at work, it is a sight of awe and caution, as they bend the fabric of reality, slow the march of seconds, or rewrite small parts of history. This profound command over time makes Chronomantic Scholars formidable allies and feared adversaries, for in the hands of such powerful sorcerers, time is both a weapon and a canvas.
Threads of Fate
At 1st level, a Chronomantic Scholar gains the ability to perceive and subtly manipulate the threads of time around them. As a bonus action, you can cause one creature you can see within 60 feet to reroll any ability check, attack roll, or saving throw it just made. You decide whether to use the original roll or the new one. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Tapestry of Ages
Starting at 6th level, your understanding of the cosmic tapestry allows you to manipulate the age and decay of objects around you. As an action, you can age an object you can see within 30 feet up to 100 years per minute or restore it to its original state, potentially rusting weapons or rejuvenating decayed bridges. This ability does not work on magical items or living creatures. You can use this feature once per long rest.
Echoes of Time
At 14th level, your connection to the temporal flow allows you to echo past spells. Immediately after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st through 5th level that targets only one creature, you can spend 3 sorcery points to target the same creature again with the same spell (as if you were casting the spell a second time). The second spell must be cast on your next turn or the ability is lost.
Master of Moments
Upon reaching 18th level, you gain mastery over small moments in time. You can choose to take two turns during the first round of any combat. On your first turn, you take your normal actions, and on the second turn, you can take only a bonus action and move up to your speed. After using this feature, you can't move or take actions until after your next turn. You must finish a long rest before you can use this feature again.
Spell List Additions
Starting at 1st level, you learn additional spells at certain levels, as shown on the Chronomantic Scholar Spells table. These spells count as sorcerer spells for you, but they don't count against your number of spells known.
| Level | Spells |
|---|---|
| 1st | Alarm, Longstrider |
| 3rd | Gentle Repose, Rope Trick |
| 5th | Blink, Slow |
| 7th | Dimension Door, Freedom of Movement |
