Always remember however, that the first time your Companion falls in combat you can expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher to reconstitute your companion, you must do this on the turn immidiately after the companion falls, or you wont be able reconstitute them. The companion will reconstitute with half their hit points. If you die, your companion will become a mundane dog, and guard your body and wait by your grave until the end of its days.

In combat, your companion shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. The Companion moves and uses it reaction on its own, but will only take the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command to take another action. The action can be one from its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated your companion take any action of its choice, not just Dodge, however the Companion will opt to make an attempt to stablize you if possible.
