Base Class: Ranger

Beast Master with some upgrades

Ranger’s Companion

At 3rd level, you gain a beast companion that accompanies you on your adventures and is trained to fight alongside you. Choose a beast that is no larger than Medium and that has a challenge rating of 1/2 or lower. Add your proficiency bonus to the beast’s AC, and attack rolls, as well as to any saving throws and skills it is proficient in. Its hit point maximum equals the average hit point number in its stat block or five times your ranger level, whichever is higher. Like any creature, it can spend Hit Dice during a short rest to regain hit points.

The beast obeys your commands as best as it can.

In combat, the beast takes its turn during your initiative count. It can move and use its reaction (such as opportunity attacks) on its own following your verbal command (no action required by you), but the only actions it takes on its turn is the Dodge, Dash, Disengage, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action, except for multi-attack.

If you are incapacitated or absent, the beast acts on its own with a focus on protecting you and itself, and can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge, Dash, or Disengage.

If your beast companion dies, you can use your action, within the next minute to touch it and expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher. The beast returns to life at the beginning of your next turn having regained 1d8 per level of the spell slot spent + your Wisdom Modifier hit points.
If you fail to revive your beast companion within the one minute deadline, it can no longer be revived this way, but you can obtain a new companion by spending 8 hours magically bonding with a beast that isn’t hostile to you and that meets the requirements.

Companion's Bond

You know the beast bond and cure wounds spell and they do not count against your total known spells.
In addition your beast companion ignores the maximum intelligence stat requirements to be targeted by the beast bond spell.

Exceptional Training

Beginning at 7th level, whenever you miss an attack on a target that is within 5ft of your beast companion, your beast companion can use its reaction to make an attack of opportunity against the target.

Also, your Beast Companion can now take the Help or Hide Action when it is not issued a command as a bonus action, not just Dodge, Dash, or Disengage.

In addition you now add your proficiency bonus to the beast companion’s damage rolls, and the beast's attacks now count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to non-magical attacks and damage.

Patient Predator

Beginning at 7th level, whenever you cast a spell using your bonus action, or cast a spell that targets your beast companion, your beast companion gains temporary hit points equal to the spell level + your ranger spell attack modifier

Bestial Fury

Starting at 11th level, when you use a bonus action to command your beast companion to take the Attack action, the beast can make two attacks, or it can take the Multiattack action if it has that action.

Primal Form

Starting at 11th level your beast companion can now be a beast of size Large or smaller and of a challenge rating of up to CR 2.

If your current companion has a “dire”/”giant” or greater counterpart etc. Once a day you can perform a ritual over the course of 10 minutes, or expend a spell slot as an action, to have it transform into that greater form.
I.e wolf to dire wolf, boar to giant boar or black bear to cave bear, etc.
Alternatively you can have an already giant/dire companion assume a lesser form. i.e giant frog to frog.
A transformed beast companion returns to its original form after; it is knocked unconscious, you dismiss it as an action, or you take a long rest.

Soul Bonded

Beginning at 15th level, as long as your beast companion can see you, when you issue a command you do not have to do so verbally for it to understand and follow your instructions.

Additionally, when you cast a spell targeting yourself, you can also affect your beast companion with the spell if the beast is within 30 feet of you.
