Base Class: Warlock
Warlocks who forge a bond with the Patron of the Blade enter into a pact with an enigmatic and ancient being of martial prowess. This patron could be a legendary swordmaster, a deity of war, or an ancient spirit of the blade itself. Such a patron grants their warlocks the ability to summon and wield weapons imbued with eldritch power, allowing them to blend spellcasting with devastating melee combat.
These warlocks are warriors on the battlefield, their pact weapons becoming an extension of their will and a conduit for their patron’s power. They are feared for their ability to strike down enemies with both magical and physical might, often manifesting their patron's essence through the unique properties of their weapons.
Expanded Spell List
The Patron of the Blade's influence allows you to tap into a repertoire of spells that enhance your combat abilities. Your patron grants you access to powerful smites and protective spells, augmenting your prowess in battle.
Eldritch Armory
At 1st level, the bond with your patron begins to manifest physically. You gain proficiency with medium armor, shields, and martial weapons, making you more resilient and versatile in combat. Your pact weapon becomes a true extension of your will, using your Charisma for attack and damage rolls and overcoming resistances with its magical nature.
Blade Bond
By 6th level, your connection to your pact weapon strengthens, allowing you to summon it instantly and imbue it with one of several powerful properties. This bond lets you adapt your weapon to any combat situation, ensuring you have the right tool for any battle.
Eldritch Smite
At 10th level, your patron teaches you to channel your eldritch power into your strikes. By expending a spell slot, you can unleash devastating smites that deal significant damage and potentially knock enemies prone. This ability ensures that every hit with your pact weapon can turn the tide of battle.
Master of the Blade
By 14th level, your mastery over your pact weapon is unparalleled. You can summon it with two powerful properties simultaneously, making you a formidable opponent in any fight. Additionally, your patron ensures you are never without power, granting you a spell slot at the start of combat if you have none left.
Warlocks of the Patron of the Blade are formidable warriors, combining the finesse and power of a martial fighter with the arcane might of a spellcaster. Their pact weapons are legendary, their presence on the battlefield commanding respect and fear. These warlocks are champions of their patrons, wielding their weapons with skill and mystical power, and leaving a trail of defeated foes in their wake.
Eldritch Armory
When you choose this subclass at 1st level, your pact weapon becomes an extension of your will. You gain proficiency with medium armor, shields, and martial weapons.
Additionally, you can use your Charisma modifier instead of Strength or Dexterity for attack and damage rolls with your pact weapon. Your pact weapon is considered magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.
Blade Bond
Starting at 6th level, your connection to your pact weapon deepens. You can summon your pact weapon as a bonus action, and it can take any form you choose each time you summon it. When you use this feature, your pact weapon gains one of the following properties until you dismiss it or summon a new weapon:
- Vorpal Edge: The weapon scores a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.
- Flame Tongue: The weapon deals an additional 1d6 fire damage on a hit.
- Frost Brand: The weapon deals an additional 1d6 cold damage on a hit.
- Thunderous Smite: The weapon deals an additional 1d6 thunder damage on a hit.
Eldritch Smite
At 10th level, you gain the ability to channel your eldritch power into devastating strikes. When you hit a creature with your pact weapon, you can expend a Warlock spell slot to deal additional damage to the target. The extra damage is 2d8 for a 1st-level spell slot, plus 1d8 for each spell level higher than 1st, to a maximum of 5d8. The damage type is the same as that of your pact weapon.
Additionally, if the target is a creature, it must succeed on a Strength saving throw against your Warlock spell save DC or be knocked prone.
Master of the Blade
Starting at 14th level, your mastery over your pact weapon is unrivaled. When you summon your pact weapon, you can choose two properties from the Blade Bond feature instead of one.
Furthermore, when you roll initiative and have no uses of your Warlock spell slots remaining, you regain one use of your Warlock spell slot.
Invocations for the Patron of the Blade
Here are some additional invocations that synergize with the Patron of the Blade subclass:
Accursed Armor
You can cast Mage Armor on yourself at will, without expending a spell slot or material components.
Eldritch Parry
When a creature hits you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to add your Charisma modifier to your AC for that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss.
Soul of the Blade
Your pact weapon deals an additional 1d6 necrotic damage, and you regain hit points equal to the necrotic damage dealt.
