Base Class: Barbarian
The Path of the Gambler is a Primal Path of the barbarian. It replaces the Rage ability with a version that is stronger, but cannot be easily activated. If you want to risk your luck and be rewarded for it, you can choose this path and have a lot of fun.
Gambling
At level 3, your Rage is now called and changed to Gambling. When you activate Gambling, you go into gambling mode. In gambling mode, you no longer get the benefits of the normal Rage, but instead roll the dice to win the jackpot. At the beginning of each of your rounds, you roll 1d20. You use the result from your dice roll + your Strength modifier to try to beat a DC of 16. If you don't manage it, nothing happens, and you get a new chance in your next round. If you beat the DC, you go into jackpot mode.
While in jackpot mode, you gain the following benefits if you aren’t wearing heavy armor:
- You have advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.
- When you make an unarmed strike or melee weapon attack using Strength, you gain a bonus to the damage roll that increases as you gain levels as a barbarian, as shown in the Rage Damage column of the Barbarian table.
- You have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.
- You regain 1d6 hit points every round, provided that you have at least 1 hit point. If you lose a body part, the missing part instantly regrows and returns to full functionality after 1d4 + 4 rounds if you are in jackpot mode and have at least 1 hit point the whole time.
If you are able to cast spells, you can’t cast them or concentrate on them while in jackpot mode.
Every version of your jackpot mode and your gambling mode lasts for 1 minute. They end early if you are knocked unconscious. If you are in jackpot mode, your turn ends and you haven’t attacked a hostile creature since your last turn or taken damage since then, you go back into gambling mode. You can also end any version of your jackpot mode or your gambling mode on your turn as a bonus action.
If you are in gambling mode and start your round with 0 hit points, you roll as normal, if you don’t beat the DC, the gambling mode ends early, but if you beat the DC, you enter jackpot mode, where you regain 1d4 hit points and lost body parts instantly regrow and return to full functionality.
Once you have gambled the number of times shown for your barbarian level in the Rages column of the Barbarian table, you must finish a long rest before you can gamble again.
True gamble
At level 6, when you enter gambling mode, difficult gamble mode or big jackpot mode, you can also create a sphere with a 16-foot radius around you. You are always the center of the sphere. The sphere disappears when you end gambling mode, difficult gamble mode or big jackpot mode. Once per round, you can cast True Strike at a target in the sphere as a bonus action. True Strike then works on the target for each attack, doesn’t end until the sphere disappears, and requires no concentration. If the target leaves the sphere, True Strike stops working for that target. If you choose a new target for True Strike, it will only affect the new target.
Great gambler
At level 10, True Strike counts for all hostile creatures in the sphere, instead of just one target. True Strike automatically affects all targets and therefore does not require a gesture to activate. The sphere is now characterized by a hollow, transparent and black-looking ball at the edge of the radius. Although the ball is visible, it does not affect visibility in or out of the sphere.
All-in
At level 14, the sphere has a 32-foot radius, in all versions of your jackpot, if a hostile creature doesn’t beat your armor class, you can use your reaction to attack the hostile creature, and if you gamble, you can go into the difficult gamble mode instead of the gamble mode. In difficult gambling mode, your dice roll does not add your Strength modifier. If you beat the DC in the difficult gambling mode, you will enter the big jackpot mode instead of the jackpot mode. In the big jackpot mode, you regain 8d6 + your strength modifier hit points instead of 1d6, and the missing body parts instantly regrow and return to full functionality after 1d4 rounds instead of 1d4 + 4 rounds.
If you are in difficult gambling mode and start your round with 0 hit points, you roll as normal, if you don’t beat the DC, the difficult gambling mode ends early, but if you beat the DC, you enter big jackpot mode, you regain 10d6 + your strength modifier hit points and lost body parts instantly regrow and return to full functionality.
