Barbarian
Base Class: Barbarian

The Shadowlands are deeply touched by the dark magic of the shadowfell and the Shadow Thane. While many of the Thane's old followers have chosen different paths, the path of Shadows is the one that most fanatically cleaves to the first savior of the land.

When you choose this path you are marked by the shadows - the result of which is deeply unsettling to those who see it. Select one or more from the table below or roll to determine your shadow mark.

  1.  You do not cast a shadow. Instead you have dark, living tattoos that move along your skin, sometimes forming words. You have no conscious control over the shadow.
  2. You have a strange feral quality such as elongated teeth, sharpened nails, a slight tail, or even tentacles. Such details however, are only visible in the corner of an onlooker's gaze. Looking directly at you, no one can see it.
  3. You never shout and rarely raise your voice much above a whisper. Everyone notices this, but no one struggles to hear you.
  4. Your eyes are completely black. No whites.
  5. You do not sleep. You sit or lay completely still, barely even breathing, but you are awake and conscious the whole time.
  6. Your dreams project dark phantoms around you. People may interact with these, but they cannot be harmed by them.

Fog of Shadows

When you take damage from another creature while raging you may use your reaction to do one of the following.

 1) Reduce damage by 1d6.

 2) Deal 1d6 necrotic or force damage to the attacking creature.

The die used increases at levels 6, 10, and 14

The darkness within

Beginning at 6th level the shadows that you call in your rage are always with you. Gain a permanent +2 AC bonus and resistance to a type of damage of your choice. You may change this choice after completing a long rest. The damage dealt or diminished by fog of shadows increases to 1d8.

Ac bonus

Gain a permanent +2 your ac while using unarmored defense.

Cloud of Shadows

At 10th level you have gained enough control of the shadows to aid your companions. As a bonus action you can extend your fog of shadows to a creature you can see. The next time that creature takes damage they gain the benefit of fog of Shadows. You may add your constitution bonus to the damage dealt or diminished by fog or cloud of shadows.

Rage of Shadows

At 14th level the shadows imbue every element of your rage. You gain the following benefits while raging.

Once every turn, when you make a successful melee attack against a creature it must make a wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + proficiency bonus + con modifier) or be frightened. The creature may re-roll their wisdom saving throw at the start of each of their turns. Once they save, the creature cannot be frightened from this effect again.

When you kill a creature you can choose one of the following

  1) Gain temporary hit points equal to the amount of damage the final blow dealt. These last for as long as the barbarian maintains rage.

  2) Add a number equal to half the damage dealt to your next attack.

  3) Deal necrotic damage equal to the damage the final blow dealt on your next attack. If the attack misses, you may use your bonus action to add half the damage dealt to the attack role.

Example: A creature might have only 5 hit points of health left, but the final blow from the barbarian deals 15 damage. The barbarian may choose to gain 15 temp hit points, add 7 to their next attack role, or deal 15 points of necrotic damage on their next attack. If on the next attack the barbarian misses, they can use their bonus action to add 7 to their attack roll, potentially changing it from a miss to a hit.
