Warlock
Base Class: Warlock

In the shadows where mortality meets the unknown, there exists a pact that transcends life and death itself. Warlocks who forge a bond with the Grim Reaper gain dark powers that manipulate the very fabric of life, death, and fate. The bond is represented by the shadowy scythe of Death itself, a reaping tool used to harvest the souls of the dead.

Harbinger of Mortality: As a Grim Reaper warlock, you wield a scythe of inevitability, becoming a harbinger of mortality's inexorable march. Your presence chills the hearts of mortals and unnerves even the most stalwart adventurers. Shadows cling to you, and your eyes may glow faintly with the eerie light of the beyond.

Soul Collector: Your patron grants you the ability to manipulate souls, a currency of the afterlife. Souls you harvest using Death's power are bartered to fuel your dark magic. Every slain foe brings you closer to your patron, and closer to understanding the conceptual nature of life of death.

Reaper's Pact: At the heart of your pact lies a symbiotic relationship with death itself. Your patron may be a manifestation of death's essence, a powerful reaper from the outer realms, or even an ancient deity of the underworld. In return for your service and reverence, you gain insight into the workings of fate and the mysteries of the afterlife.

Death's Embrace: As you advance in power, death's touch becomes more palpable. You gain abilities that manipulate life force, such as draining vitality from your enemies to heal your wounds or curse them with the specter of impending demise. Your very presence can induce dread, and those who oppose you feel the weight of mortality bearing down upon them.

Roleplaying Notes: Playing a Grim Reaper warlock means embracing themes of mortality, fate, and the balance between life and death. Your character might be obsessed with understanding the nature of souls, seeking to defy or uphold the natural order, or driven by a personal vendetta against those who would cheat death. Your powers might manifest as shadowy tendrils, whispers from beyond, or the sudden chill of death's touch upon your enemies.

Expanded Spell List

The Grim Reaper lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.

Grim Reaper Expanded Spells
Spell Level Spells
1st inflict wounds, false life
2nd blindness/deafness, silence
3rd bestow curse, phantom steed
4th death ward, greater invisibility
5th contagion, insect plague

Deathbringer

Starting at 1st level, you acquire knowledge and prowess necessary to exercise Death's will. You gain proficiency with Medium armor.

In addition, you can spend an action to summon a deadly scythe made of shadow. The scythe counts as a magical weapon with which you are proficient. It has the two-handed and reach weapon properties. When you attack with the shadow scythe, you use your Charisma modifier for attack and damage rolls. And it deals slashing damage equal to 2d4 plus your Charisma modifier. If the scythe leaves your hand for any reason, it instantly disappears in a puff of black smoke and must be summoned again. Finally, the shadow scythe can be used as a spellcasting focus.

Death's Grace

At 6th level, your connection to death strengthens, greatly improving your resilience. You gain resistance to necrotic and poison damage.

Additionally, when you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. When this happens, all creatures you choose within 5 feet who can see you must succeed a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or become stunned until the start of your next turn. You can’t use this feature again until you finish a long rest.

Reaper

Starting at 10th level, you further embody the aspects of the Grim Reaper, empowering the strength of your shadow scythe. The base damage for your shadow scythe increases to 2d8. When you make an attack with the shadow scythe, you can choose to change the damage type from slashing to either necrotic or poison damage.

In addition, you gain the ability to perform a deadly reaping attack that damages all enemies in your path. When you hit a creature with your scythe, you can perform a sweeping attack against all other creatures within 5 feet of you as part of the attack. If the original attack roll would hit the surrounding creatures, they take the same damage dealt to the first target. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1) per long rest.

Avatar of Death

At 14th level, you become a living conduit for the Grim Reaper's will, able to channel your patron's strength to bring death to all who cross your path. You are immune to necrotic and poison damage. As a bonus action, you can enter an avatar state that envelopes you in a hooded shroud of darkness for 1 minute. All creatures you choose within 30 feet who can see you must succeed a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or become frightened of you for the duration of the ability. Creatures frightened in this way can attempt another Wisdom saving throw at the end of each of their turns to end the condition. While the avatar state is active, you gain resistance to slashing, bludgeoning, and piercing damage. If you take slashing, bludgeoning, or piercing damage from an attack that targets you specifically, the attacker suffers the same damage (after calculating resistance).

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
