Warlock Patron: The Mundane Sage
The Mundane Sage is a whimsical and humorous Warlock patron that defies the conventional expectations of powerful and otherworldly entities. Unlike traditional patrons—such as ancient beings, powerful deities, or eldritch horrors—the Mundane Sage is an entirely ordinary person, completely unremarkable in every conceivable way. This patron is a random citizen, living a perfectly mundane life, perhaps working a regular job, running errands, and spending their weekends tending to a garden or enjoying a cup of coffee. They possess no magical powers, no arcane knowledge, and no connection to the supernatural—at least, none that they are aware of.
Yet, in a twist of fate or through some cosmic joke, this utterly average individual has become the source of your Warlock powers. The connection between you and the Mundane Sage is as inexplicable as it is amusing, and it results in a magical bond that is as unpredictable as it is mundane. Your powers, while formidable, carry with them a distinct flavor of the ordinary, causing your magic to manifest in bizarre, unexpected, and often humorous ways.
The Nature of the Mundane Sage
The Mundane Sage is defined by their complete normalcy. They are not aware of their status as a patron, and they continue to live their life blissfully ignorant of the magical powers they have somehow bestowed upon you. This lack of awareness makes the relationship between you and your patron both absurd and endearing. The magic you wield is colored by the Sage’s mundane existence, turning what might be terrifying or awe-inspiring spells into something surprisingly ordinary—or, at times, hilariously out of place.
Your connection to the Mundane Sage grants you access to an expanded spell list that emphasizes the blend of the magical and the mundane. Spells such as Unseen Servant and Mage Hand reflect the subtle and everyday nature of your patron’s influence, while spells like Tasha's Hideous Laughter and Confusion embody the bizarre and unpredictable side effects of drawing power from such an unlikely source.
Features and Abilities
As a Warlock of the Mundane Sage, your abilities are as eclectic as they are amusing. At 1st level, you gain the feature Mundane Aura, which allows you to subtly alter the appearance or utility of everyday objects, making them seem slightly more interesting or useful. This feature also enhances your ability to entertain others with trivial tricks, adding a touch of charm to your otherwise ordinary spells.
As you grow in power, your connection to the Mundane Sage deepens. At 6th level, Relatable Charm grants you a bonus to Charisma checks when dealing with non-magical creatures who find comfort in your seemingly normal demeanor. This feature also allows you to cast Disguise Self once per long rest, transforming into a completely unremarkable individual—perfect for blending into crowds or avoiding suspicion.
By 10th level, your magic takes on even more absurd qualities. The Mundane Trickster feature lets you modify your spells in ways that reflect the quirky and unpredictable nature of your patron. Whether causing your spells to manifest through ordinary objects, reducing the visibility of your magic, or adding amusing side effects, this feature ensures that your powers remain as funny and bewildering as they are effective.
At 14th level, the Sage’s Resilience feature grants you resistance to psychic damage and enhances your mental fortitude, reflecting the Sage’s ability to endure the monotony of everyday life. Additionally, when you are near death, the resilience of your patron allows you to bounce back with a surge of temporary hit points, showcasing the surprising strength that can come from an ordinary existence.
The Humor and Power of the Mundane Sage
The Mundane Sage is a patron that brings a unique blend of humor and power to your Warlock’s arsenal. Your spells and abilities are infused with a delightful absurdity, making every encounter a potential source of amusement for you and your allies. While your patron may not be aware of the magical bond you share, their influence is undeniable, as it adds a layer of unpredictability and charm to your magical abilities.
This patron is perfect for players who enjoy injecting a bit of comedy into their campaigns, as well as those who appreciate the irony of drawing great power from the most unremarkable of sources. The Mundane Sage offers a refreshing departure from the dark and foreboding themes often associated with Warlocks, providing a character concept that is as lighthearted as it is compelling.
In the world of the Mundane Sage, even the most ordinary person can become the unwitting source of extraordinary magic, proving that sometimes, the greatest power comes from the most unexpected places. Whether you’re casting spells with a twist or charming your way through life with a disarming smile, the Mundane Sage ensures that your journey as a Warlock is filled with laughter, surprise, and just a hint of the absurd.
Expanded Spell List
The Mundane Sage lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a Warlock spell. The following spells are added to the Warlock spell list for you.
| Warlock Level | Spells |
|---|---|
| 1st | Unseen Servant, Mage Hand |
| 3rd | Detect Thoughts, Tasha's Hideous Laughter |
| 5th | Bestow Curse, Hypnotic Pattern |
| 7th | Confusion, Phantasmal Killer |
| 9th | Dominate Person, Mislead |
1st Level: Mundane Aura
The most unremarkable magic.
You exude an aura of the ordinary. At 1st level, you can use your action to make a mundane object within 30 feet of you appear slightly more interesting or useful. For example, a plain old mug could suddenly seem to have an intriguing pattern, or a piece of rope could be used to create a perfectly-tied knot.
Additionally, you have advantage on Charisma (Performance) checks made to entertain or amuse others with trivial tricks and illusion
6th Level: Relatable Charm
The magic of being entirely average.
Starting at 6th level, you gain a +2 bonus to Charisma (Deception) and Charisma (Persuasion) checks when interacting with non-magical creatures who are more likely to trust or like ordinary individuals. You can use this feature to blend in with mundane crowds, making it easier to go unnoticed in a sea of regular people.
Moreover, once per long rest, you can use an action to cast Disguise Self without expending a spell slot, transforming yourself into a completely ordinary individual. The illusion is so convincing that people will generally assume you are just another face in the crowd.
10th Level: The Mundane Trickster
A touch of the extraordinary in the ordinary.
At 10th level, your magic becomes humorously effective. When you cast a Warlock spell of 1st level or higher, you can choose to apply one of the following effects:
- Ordinary Objects: Your spell manifests through mundane items. For example, casting Fireball might cause a harmless burst of flames from a common object like a lantern or a piece of parchment.
- Unremarkable Effects: Your spell's effects appear unremarkable, making it less likely to attract unwanted attention. This makes it easier to use spells discreetly in crowded or casual settings.
- Absurd Results: Once per short rest, you can cause a spell to have an unintended but amusing side effect. For instance, Teleportation might result in a comical mishap, like arriving in the middle of a local festival.
14th Level: Sage’s Resilience
Enduring the mundane with supernatural ease.
At 14th level, your patron’s ordinary influence grants you extraordinary resilience. You gain resistance to psychic damage and have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.
Additionally, when you drop to 0 hit points and are not killed outright, you can use your reaction to gain temporary hit points equal to your Warlock level + your Charisma modifier. These temporary hit points last until the end of your next turn. This ability reflects the mundane yet somehow surprisingly effective nature of your patron’s influence.
