Base Class: Barbarian
Barbarians who walk the Path of the Wendigo draw their rage from the cold, intense hunger that perverts the land in the vicinity of the Wendigo: an ancient, malevolent spirit that corrupts the wicked and invokes acts of murder, insatiable greed, or even cannibalism. A barbarian possessed by the spirit of the Wendigo may have been one of its victims, who now chooses to inflict the same pain onto others, or a shaman who takes on the curse of the Wendigo to keep their tribe from falling to its clutches. Whatever the reason, barbarians who walk the Path of the Wendigo are able to debilitate their foes with gnawing hunger, paralyzing fear, or sickening greed.
Aura of Starvation
When you choose this path at 3rd level, your being is possessed by the spirit of the Wendigo. You appear emaciated and pale, your eyes sink into your skull and your skin goes taut against your bones. Creatures around you feel a hungry. sickening dread in your presence. When you enter your rage, you gain resistance to cold and necrotic damage, and each creature within 5 feet of you of your choice can feel their life essence be consumed. An affected creature must succeed a Constitution saving throw (the DC equals 8+ your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier) or have their hit point maximum reduced by 1d4. If you reduce their hit point maximum past the amount of their current HP, they take the appropriate amount of necrotic damage. You can repeat the effect with a bonus action on each of your turns. The amount increases when you reach certain levels in this class, increasing to 2d4 at 10th level 3d4 at 15th level, and 4d4 at 20th level.
Apex Predator
At 6th level, the spirit of the Wendigo enables you to become a vicious predator, able to stalk your enemies with ease. You gain proficiency in Survival and Stealth, and when you finish a short or long rest you may choose one of the following benefits, which lasts until you finish another short or long rest:
- You gain blindsight out to a range of 10 feet and darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. If you already have darkvision from your race, its range increases by 30 feet.
- You can mimic sounds you have heard, including voices, and you have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion, Intimidation, or Deception) checks against a creature's Wisdom (Insight) or Intelligence (Investigation) check while mimicking a different sound.
- Your speed increases by 10 feet, and you can use the Dash or Hide actions as a bonus action.
Curse of the Spirit
At 10th level you gain the ability to reach into the mind of one creature you can see within 60 and instill it with intense fear and paranoia, a primal hunger, or a sickening greed. You may choose one of the following effects, and each affect must be concentrated on as if they were a concentration spell.
Psychosis. As an action, you force a creature to make an Intelligence saving throw. On a failure, the creature is placed under the effects of the Enemies Abound spell If the creature is immune to being frightened it does not automatically succeed its saving throw but instead has advantage on it. The creature may repeat their saving throw at the end of each of their turns.
Hunger. As an action, you force a creature to make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, you inflict upon them a level of exhaustion, as intense hunger grips their body. The creature may repeat their saving throw at the end of each of their turns, and you can affect the same creature multiple times with this effect while maintaining concentration.
Greed. As an action, you force a creature to make a Charisma saving throw. On a failure, the creature sees its greatest desire in a 5 foot cube of your choice. They must spend their turn running towards the object as fast as they are able, and may only take the Dash action. Once they reach the area, they must make another Charisma saving throw or become incapacitated as they try and fail to grab the apparition of their greatest desire. The creature may repeat their saving throw at the end of each of their turns. You may use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency modifier, and you regain all spent uses after finishing a long rest.
Heart of Ice
At 14th level your body is now a vessel of the Wendigo spirit. When you rage, the ghostly form of the Wendigo wraps around you, granting you the following benefits:
- The range of your Aura of Starvation is increased to creatures within 10 feet of you.
- You can choose two of the Apex Predator abilities instead of one per short or long rest.
- When you hit a creature with a melee attack, you can deal an extra 2d6 cold damage. You regain an amount of hit points equal to that bonus damage.
