Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

Most commonly found acting as guards of keeps and palaces, or keepers of ruins and temples, the Gargoyle Warden is a silent, stalwart watcher ever ready to defend their chosen place with their gargoyle companion at their side.

Your bond with your stony companion grows and matures over time--as does your companion itself. As your bond grows, so to do the benefits you receive from your companion.

Stone Warden

At 3rd level, the fledgling bond between ranger and gargoyle grants you the following benefits:

  • You have advantage on Strength checks.
  • You have advantage on Acrobatics checks.
  • You are proficient in either history, arcana, or religion, depending on your chosen place of guardianship.
  • You can speak, read, and comprehend Primordial and Terran.
  • If you don't have it already, you gain Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Additionally, you gain access to the following spells:

  • Stone Façade
Your skin takes on the appearance of a stone type of your choice, making you appear as a statue. Those wishing to deduce your true nature must succeed a DC 15 Perception or Investigation check.
  • Stone Claws
Your hands grow claws made of stone, sharp and durable. You add 1d6 slash damage to unarmed strikes made while the spell is active.

Gargoyle Companion

At 3rd level, you gain a Juvenile Gargoyle as a companion. Add your proficiency bonus too the Juvenile Gargoyle's AC, attack rolls, and damage rolls, as well as any saving throws and skills it is proficient in. Like any creature, it can spend Hit Dice during a short rest.

The Juvenile Gargoyle obeys your commands as best as it can. It takes its turn on your initiative, but after you. On your turn, you can verbally command the Juvenile Gargoyle where to move (no action required by you). You can use your action to verbally command it to take the Attack, Dash, Disengage, or Help action. If you don't issue a command, it takes the Dodge action. If you are incapacitated or absent, the Juvenile Gargoyle acts on its own, focusing on protecting you and itself. It never requires your command to use its reaction, such as when making an opportunity attack.

Once you have the Extra Attack feature, you can make one weapon attack yourself when you command the Juvenile Gargoyle to take the Attack action.

While traveling through your favored terrain with only the Juvenile Gargoyle, you can move stealthily at a normal pace.

Bond of Earth and Stone

At 7th level, the bond between ranger and gargoyle has matured--as has your gargoyle companion itself.

Your Juvenile Gargoyle is now a Gargoyle, and uses the appropriate stat block. It grows stone wings and gains a flying speed of 60 feet. If you are Medium size or smaller, you may ride your Gargoyle as a mount; however, its flying speed is halved while ridden.

You gain resistance to poison damage, as well as immunity to the Poisoned and Petrified conditions.

Stone Might

At 11th level, your bond with your partner has increased your martial prowess.

When either you or your Gargoyle make an attack within 30 feet of each other, you may roll an extra attack die.

You gain access to the spell Meld into Stone, which counts as a Ranger spell for you.

Apex Bond

At 15th level, the magical nature of your bond increases further.

Your Gargoyle companion has reached the pinnacle of its kind, and becomes an Apex Gargoyle, using the appropriate stat block. Its size is now Large. The Apex Gargoyle can now use its full flying speed while ridden.

When casting a spell, you may choose to use your companion as a conduit, casting the spell from the Apex Gargoyle rather than yourself.

You gain access to the spell Stone Shape, which counts as a Ranger spell for you.
