Base Class: Monk
Warriors of Dragon Slaying are a rare sight to behold. They spend their time in the lairs of their Dragon Master and only a handful are roaming the planes. Whether a Dragon becomes the tutor for justice or malevolence, the intensive training allows their student to harness the power and ferocity of Dragons.
Monks that study under a dragon are often less graceful than their conventional counterparts, reflecting the intensity and ferocity of their Master. They tend to end up as Mercenaries or Bodyguards due to their sheer power and wisdom. The most important value of these rare fighters is that, due to their study and training from a Dragon, they have become adept at fighting Dragons themselves. This often leads their Dragon Master to be cautious when teaching them and they will often cease the training before it is complete so the chance of being betrayed is minimised.
Draconic Focus
3rd-Level Warrior of Dragon Slaying Feature
Your Dragon Slayer training begins to manifest itself in your body. Choose the nature of your Dragon Master from the table below. You gain the following benefits, each of which is augmented by your Dragon Master's nature:
Dragon Master
| Dragon Master | Damage Type |
|---|---|
| Black | Acid |
| Blue | Lightning |
| Brass | Fire |
| Bronze | Lightning |
| Copper | Acid |
| Gold | Fire |
| Green | Poison |
| Red | Fire |
| Silver | Cold |
| White | Cold |
Tongue of Dragons. You can speak, read, and write Draconic. Additionally, whenever you make an Intimidation check, add your Wisdom modifier to the check.
Damage Resistance. You gain resistance to your Dragon Master's element.
Breath Weapon. When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with an exhalation of draconic energy in either a 15-foot Cone or a 30-foot Line that is 5 feet wide (choose the shape each time). Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Wisdom modifier and Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, a creature takes damage equal to two rolls of your martial arts die of the type determined by your Dragon Master choice. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage. This damage increases by one additional die roll when you reach character levels 5 (three rolls), 11 (four rolls), and 17 (five rolls).
You can use this Breath Weapon a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest. While you have no uses available, you can spend 2 Focus Points to use this feature again.
Dragon Slayer's Strikes. You use your Focus to channel the energy of your Dragon Master. Once per turn when you hit a creature with an Unarmed Strike and deal damage, you can expend 1 Focus Point to deal extra damage equal to one roll of your Martial Arts die plus your Wisdom modifier. The damage type of this strike is determined by your Dragon Master choice.
Dragon Slaying Critical. When you score a Critical Hit that deals damage to a creature with the Dragon type, you can roll an additional damage die when determining the extra damage the target takes. This additional damage can be either Bludgeoning or Force damage (your choice).
Skyward Ascent
6th-Level Warrior of Dragon Slaying Feature
When you spend a Focus Point to use your Step of the Wind, you can unfurl spectral draconic wings from your back that vanish at the end of your turn. While the wings exist, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Elemental Combination
11th-Level Warrior of Dragon Slaying Feature
Your rigorous training and understanding of how to manifest your Draconic Focus has risen to such a level that you have manifested a second element. Choose a second Dragon Master from the previous table or choose a Rare Master from the table below. You gain all previous features with this new Dragon Master element, however you may not use both damage types at once for your Breath Weapon.
| Rare Dragon Master | Damage Type |
|---|---|
| Shadow | Necrotic |
| Solar | Radiant |
Aspect of the Wyrm
11th-Level Warrior of Dragon Slaying Feature
As a bonus action, you can imbue yourself with Draconic might, entering a heightened combat state. This form lasts for 1 minute or until you have the Incapacitated condition. You gain the following benefits while this feature is active:
Improved Dragon Slayer's Strikes. Once per turn when you hit a creature with an Unarmed Strike and deal damage, you can use Dragon Slayer's Strikes with that attack without expending a Focus Point. Additionally, you can now use Dragon Slayer's Strikes twice on each of your turns.
Wyrm's Lash. Whenever a creature within 5 feet of you hits you with an attack roll, you can force that creature to take damage equal to one roll of your Martial arts die (no action required).
Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a Long Rest. You can also restore your use of it by expending 3 Focus points.
Aspect of the Greatwyrm
17th-Level Warrior of Dragon Slaying Feature
Your mastery of your Draconic Focus reaches its peak. Your Aspect of the Wyrm now lasts for 10 minutes or until you have the Incapacitated condition and is augmented in the following ways:
Dragon Slayer. Whenever you deal damage of the same type as your Dragon Master using one of your class features, deal additional damage equal to one roll of your Martial Arts die. Additionally, whenever you deal damage of the same type as your Dragon Master, ignore resistance to the damage and immunity is treated as resistance.
Empowered Breath. When you use your Breath Weapon, you can enhance its reach. The exhalation of draconic energy becomes either a 30-foot cone or a 60-foot line that is 5 feet wide (your choice).
Wings Unbound. While your Aspect of the Wyrm is active, you have a Fly Speed equal to your Speed, and can hover.

Posted Oct 22, 2024That’s probably a good way to go around it. About as close as you can get to original DB scaling without messing with martial arts die, and having it tied to the Wisdom modifier incentivises you to get the Body and Mind capstone for some more uses.

Posted Oct 22, 2024Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, it's been a tricky one to actually balance because I feel like it needs to feel good enough to use instead of just attacking, but not be so powerful that you want to use all of your attacks breath weaponing until you run out of uses/focus points.
I think I'll probably tone it down, whether that's through lowering the free uses or toning down the actual number of dice. I'm thinking of actually doing both, maybe 2d6 -> 3d10 -> 4d12 and then changing it from being proficiency bonus to being wisdom modifier for free uses, that way you CAN almost get the same amount as if it's your proficiency bonus, but it's a bigger investment to do so.

Posted Oct 22, 2024I’d advise you tone down the breath weapon scaling so it matches with that of an actual Dragonborn. Having it scale 2d6 -> 3d8 -> 4d10 -> 5d12 with the exact same wiggle-room as the original breath weapon sort of leaves it as a direct upgrade. If you like your scaling, though, I’d just make it cost a bit more in the long run to use (i.e. lower the amount of free uses)
Pretty neat subclass tho.
