Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

Class Description
Paladins of the Oath of the Forsaken Flame have abandoned their past lives, relinquishing everything they once held dear to serve a fiery deity. This sacrifice is not made lightly; it requires a deep commitment to the ideals of purity through fire and the relentless pursuit of justice. These paladins are often seen as outcasts or rebels, marked by their willingness to let go of old identities and forge new ones through the cleansing flames of their god.

Having endured trials by fire—both literal and metaphorical—Forsaken Flame paladins embody the duality of destruction and rebirth. Their mission is to eradicate corruption, defend the innocent, and incinerate evil wherever it lurks. With every swing of their sword, they channel the raw power of fire, their movements graceful yet deadly, embodying the primal force of their deity.

Appearance

Forsaken Flame paladins often display physical marks of their devotion, such as scars that resemble burns or tattoos that mimic flickering flames. Their armor is typically adorned with motifs of fire, ranging from glowing runes to intricate designs that shift like embers in the wind. Many choose colors like deep red, orange, and black, reflecting the flames that fuel their power.

Background

The journey to becoming a Forsaken Flame paladin often begins with a pivotal moment of crisis—an event that forces them to confront their past. This could be a personal tragedy, the loss of loved ones, or a profound sense of injustice that ignites their passion for change. In their moment of despair, they encounter their fire deity, who offers a chance for redemption through sacrifice. This encounter reshapes their identity, compelling them to forsake their former life in exchange for the divine strength of the flame.

Roleplaying a Forsaken Flame Paladin

When roleplaying a Forsaken Flame paladin, consider the following elements:

  • Sacrifice and Redemption: Your character is likely haunted by their past choices, using their service to the fire god as a means of atonement. How do they reconcile their former life with their current devotion?

  • Passionate Zeal: Embrace the emotional intensity of your character. They may express their fervor through bold actions, inspiring others with speeches about the transformative power of fire.

  • A Desire for Purity: Your paladin may struggle with the idea of forgiveness, often believing that true justice can only come through fire. How do they handle situations where mercy might be more appropriate?

  • Connection to the Flame: Your character might develop a personal relationship with their deity, experiencing visions or receiving guidance in dreams. How does this connection influence their decisions?

Oath of the Forsaken Flame Spells

The magic of your oath ensures you always have certain spells ready; when you reach a Paladin level specified in the Oath of Devotion Spells table, you thereafter always have the listed spells prepared.

Oath of the Forsaken Flame Spells
Paladin Level Spells
3 Burning Hands, Shield of Faith
5 Flame Blade, Scorching Ray
9 Fireball, Flame Arrows
13 Wall of Fire, Fire Storm
17 Flame Strike, Immolation

Cleansing Inferno

Cleansing Inferno: Starting at 3rd level, you can use your Channel Divinity to unleash a wave of purifying flames. As an action, each creature of your choice within 30 feet must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d6 fire damage and is blinded until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, it takes half damage and is not blinded. The damage increases to 3d6 at 11th level and 4d6 at 17th level.

Forsaken Flame

At 3rd level, you can call upon the flames to shield yourself or your allies. As a reaction when you or an ally within 30 feet takes damage, you can reduce that damage by an amount equal to your Paladin level. In doing so, your skin glows with embers for 1 minute, causing any creature that hits you with a melee attack to take fire damage equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1).

Burning Sacrifice

At 7th level, you learn to sacrifice your own vitality to empower your magic. When you cast a spell that deals fire damage, you can choose to take damage equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1) to add an additional 1d8 fire damage to that spell’s effects. This additional damage increases to 2d8 at 15th level.

Ashen Resilience

At 15th level, your past is consumed in the flames, granting you resilience. You gain resistance to all damage types. Additionally, if you drop to 0 hit points, you can choose to remain conscious until the end of your next turn, but you cannot regain hit points until you are stabilized or receive healing.

Avatar of the Forsaken Flame

At 20th level, you can transform into an avatar of purifying fire. As an action, you gain the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • You are immune to fire damage and have advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed.
  • Any creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of you takes 4d10 fire damage.
  • You can make one additional attack when you take the Attack action.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
