As opposed to studying arcane arts these bards fake it. Where one bard would use a spell to put people to sleep or confuse them, magicians will typically resort to primarily material means to confuse. However this does not mean they don't use magic, they resort to trickery as opposed to true arcane powers. 

Up your sleeve

Take an item that is the same size or smaller than a part of your body and it becomes untraceable by non magical means. Anything searching your body must roll an opposed dexterity check if the you are conscious. If you are unconscious then anyone trying to search you must make a DC 15 investigation check at disadvantage in order to find it. The maximum amount of items you can hidden carry is equal to the areas of your body that are covered by clothing: arms, chest, back, legs, hat,and feet.

You gain proficiency with three skills of your choice.

Peerless Skill

When you make an ability check or attack roll and fail, you can expend one use of Bardic Inspiration; roll the Bardic Inspiration die, and add the number rolled to the d20, potentially turning a failure into a success. On a failure, the Bardic Inspiration isn’t expended.
