Barbarian
Base Class: Barbarian

A Path of the Flagellant barbarian is a warrior who finds solace and strength in the crucible of suffering. They believe that pain and injury, far from being debilitating, can serve as a catalyst for extraordinary power. Embracing the physical toll of battle with a grim determination, they might be driven by a burning desire for vengeance, a relentless need to prove their worth, or a deep-seated belief that suffering is an essential component of the human experience. They might also be drawn to dark and forbidden rituals, whispered tales of ancient powers that promise to amplify their strength and resilience, no matter the cost.

Power from Pain

Beginning at 3rd level, you gain one benefit or drawback for every 25% of your health remaining during rage. The benefits from other thresholds do not stack.

Dulled (100-85% health): Just as a blade must be damaged in order to be sharpened, so must those who are on the path of flagellation during this state you gain the following benefits:

  • Players armor class is halved
  • Players Weapon damage is halved
  • Enticement: The allure of pain is so intoxicating that you charge into battle with reckless abandon. You gain +10 to your movement speed.

Affliction (85-50% health): As your wounds deepen, your desire for battle intensifies, fueling a relentless pursuit of combat. Those on the path of flagellation gain the following benefits:

  • Healing effects used on the player are halved
  • You have disadvantage on all saving throws
  • Eagerness: Your desire for pain is so intense that you're willing to steal glory from others. As a reaction, intercept 1d10 damage from an ally within 5 feet and take that damage instead.

Clarity (50-25% health): Your suffering has refined your combat skills to a masterful level. Your mind and body are now perfectly synchronized, and your fighting spirit is beginning to ignite. Those on the path of flagellation gain the following benefits:

  • Healing effects used on the player are reduced to zero
  • Gain 10 temporary hit points (can only benefit from this once per each rage)
  • Ecstasy: The perfect balance of pain steels your fighting spirit. As long as you maintain this state for three turns, you gain the benefits of haste.

Suffering (25-0% health): The wounds of battle begin to weigh heavily upon you. Your battered body slows, and the clarity of mind you once possessed begins to dim. However, it is your physical strength that falters, not your spirit. Those on the path of flagellation gain the following benefits:

  • Players movement is reduced by 10 feet
  • you have disadvantage on dexterity checks
  • Endurance: Is there any pain greater than that of death? Having teetered on the brink of this ultimate suffering, you harness the newfound power it has granted you. With renewed ferocity, you command your mangled body to rise and attack once more, unleashing a savage final assault. You can take one final action as if you weren't downed, but at a cost: you automatically fail your next saving throw. Doing so will also leave you with 3 points of exhaustion that will persist until your next long rest.

Penitent Prayer

The Price of Peace: The pain that afflicts the body forges a stronger mind through atonement. A Flagellant can shield their mind and bolster their spirit. To activate this effect, a Flagellant must make a weapon attack against themselves. Once this condition is met, they will receive the following benefits:

The Price of Peace:  Gain advantage on all Wisdom saving throws for one minute. Additionally, as a reaction, if you are charmed or frightened while the 'Price of Peace' effect is active, you can attempt to reroll the saving throw by attacking yourself with a weapon.

A Body's Testimony

At 10th level, for each negative condition you are afflicted with, you gain a +1 bonus to your Armor Class for its duration, up to a maximum of +3. Additionally, you gain the 'Clotted Armor' ability.

Clotted Armor: Your body has adapted to the rigors of combat. After enduring at least three turns of the bleeding condition during a fight, you gain 15 temporary hit points. Moreover, weapons coated in your own blood receive a +1d4 bonus to damage rolls.

Harmony of Body and mind

At 14th level, Path of the Flagellant barbarians gain the following powerful abilities, forged from their unwavering mastery of pain and inner peace. These abilities reflect their unique path of enlightenment, where suffering has become a catalyst for growth and strength.

Mind over Matter: Through rigorous ceremonial flagellation, you have attuned your mind to pain, achieving complete control over your body. This mastery allows you to push your physical limits, though doing so depletes your vigor. This ability enhances the Price of Peace ability in the following ways: While under the effects of Price of Peace, you gain resistance to psychic damage, the spell Calm Emotions no longer ends your rage, and you can take an additional action (attack, bonus action, or move an extra 10 feet) per combat round. However, doing so costs you one point of exhaustion.
