Base Class: Rogue
The Deckwielder subclass is for those who seek to control fate itself, harnessing the unpredictable power of cards, dice, and magical objects. As a Deckwielder, you are not just a rogue skilled in stealth and subterfuge—you are a master of chance and probability, using your connection to the forces of luck to manipulate outcomes in your favor. Whether through casting enchanted objects, channeling raw energy, or making calculated gambles, you shape the battlefield with an air of mystery and surprise.
Why Play a Deckwielder?
If you thrive on high-stakes decision-making and enjoy embracing risk with the potential for incredible rewards, the Deckwielder is the perfect subclass for you. This subclass offers a blend of strategy, magic, and pure luck, allowing you to adapt your approach to any situation, whether it's dealing precise damage, moving with agility, or gaining powerful buffs and debuffs. As a Deckwielder, you aren’t bound by the traditional expectations of a rogue. You wield objects of chance—cards, dice, and small trinkets—which can unleash either devastating effects or helpful boons. Whether you're manipulating the odds of your rolls to gain a tactical advantage, dealing extra damage with infused objects, or changing the flow of the battle entirely, your ability to control luck makes you unpredictable, flexible, and dangerous. Your subclass is ideal for players who want to blend traditional rogue gameplay with the excitement and risk of fate manipulation. You'll thrive in chaotic situations, constantly using your skills to tilt the odds in your favor while keeping your enemies guessing.
Why You Should Choose Deckwielder:
- High Stakes Gameplay: The subclass is perfect for players who love high-risk, high-reward mechanics and enjoy turning the odds in their favor.
- Tactical Flexibility: Deckwielders are not confined to simple strategies; they excel by adapting to changing circumstances and using their abilities to outmaneuver opponents.
- Unpredictability: Whether you’re causing damage, gaining buffs, or inflicting debuffs, the Deckwielder thrives on being unpredictable and keeping enemies on edge.
- Unique Roleplay Opportunities: With a connection to the forces of fate, the Deckwielder offers plenty of narrative possibilities, whether as a gambler, a mystic, or a rogue who dares to flirt with chance.
If you enjoy the thrill of rolling the dice, selecting your fate, and using your abilities to shape the battlefield, the Deckwielder subclass offers endless potential for creativity and strategic gameplay. You won't just be playing the game—you’ll be rewriting its rules with every turn.
Charming Deal
Your mastery over cards extends beyond combat, weaving into your words and demeanor. While holding or using your deck of cards during a conversation, you exude an air of confidence and mystique. You gain advantage on Deception and Persuasion checks as the flick of your cards distracts, intrigues, or mesmerizes those you interact with, making it easier to sway their opinions or mislead them.
Phantom Deal
With a flick of your wrist, you cast a card into the air, and as it lands, it becomes a beacon of your power. You instantly teleport to the location where the card lands, vanishing in a flash. This ability allows you to move quickly across the battlefield, evading enemies or reaching a strategic position with ease. The moment the card touches the ground, you disappear and reappear, leaving your foes bewildered as they struggle to track your movements. Phantom Deal offers both a tactical advantage and a surprising element of unpredictability, making you a true master of misdirection.
Empowered Deal
Through a mix of skill, magic, and sheer luck, you channel raw energy into mundane objects such as cards, dice, or small trinkets, transforming them into vessels of unpredictable power. When you infuse a die with this energy, roll a d8 to determine the effect your energized object unleashes. Each result taps into a unique force, offering either destructive potential, strategic advantage, or temporary enhancements.Roll d8:
- 1: The infused object ignites, dealing 1d4 Fire Damage to the target.
- 2: The infused object is cloaked in frost, dealing 1d4 Ice Damage to the target and halving their movement speed until the end of their next turn.
- 3: The energy fizzles—no additional effect this time.
- 4: The object hums with kinetic energy, granting you 30 feet of additional movement until the end of your turn.
- 5: The object drains life force, dealing 1d4 Necrotic Damage to the target and healing you for half the total damage dealt.
- 6: A chilling presence emanates from the object, striking fear into the target. The enemy gains the Frightened condition for 1 rounds (6 seconds), leaving them unable to move closer to you and causing disadvantage on attack rolls while in your presence.
- 7: A toxic haze surrounds the object, dealing 1d4 Poison Damage to the target.
- 8: The object erupts with force, dealing 1d4 Force Damage and pushing the target 5 feet away.
The Gambler's Pick
Your mastery over fate and probability allows you to twist the odds in your favor. Twice per long rest, you can deliberately select a specific card effect instead of leaving it to chance. As your connection to the forces of fate deepens, you gain additional uses of this ability: +2 at Level 9 (for a total of 4 uses) and +2 more at Level 17 (for a total of 6 uses). With this skill, you wield fate like a sharpened blade, ensuring the perfect effect when it matters most.
Unyielding Deal
At Level 9, your ability to manipulate fate has grown even more potent. Instead of rolling a d8, you now roll a d10 to determine the effect when you channel your power into a card, dice, or object. However, the stakes are higher—if you roll a natural 1, a Cursed Deal occurs, unleashing a harmful effect on your target. On the other hand, a natural 10 brings about a True Deal, a powerful boon that grants a significant advantage. These special outcomes can’t be chosen using The Gambler’s Pick; instead, a separate d4 roll determines which of the Cursed or True effects occur. With each roll, fate is in your hands—whether it’s a disaster or a game-changing success
D10 Roll Table:
- Cursed Deal
- 1d4 Fire Damage
- 1d4 Ice Dmg movement halved
- No effect
- No extra damage, but gain 30 feet of movement
- Enemy hit gains the Frightened condition for 1 rounds (6 sec)
- 1d4 Necrotic Damage and heal for half the total damage dealt
- 1d4 Poison Damage
- 1d4 Force Damage and push target 5 feet
- True Deal
Cursed Deal (d4 Roll):
- Enemy hit gains 30 feet of movement speed
- Next attack from enemy hit has advantage
- 1d4 extra damage, but enemy heals for triple the damage dealt to them
- Enemy hit gains +1 AC for 3 rounds (18 seconds)
True Deal (d4 Roll):
- Extra Attack
- Enemy hit becomes blinded for 2 rounds (12 seconds)
- Enemy hit is stunned until your next turn
- No extra damage, but your next attack has advantage
Restorative Shuffle
If you choose to use a card deck as your focus with this subclass, it becomes an extension of your connection to fate and magic. After finishing a long rest, you can spend 15 minutes shuffling your deck, during which time any lost or damaged cards are magically restored. The deck becomes whole again, its power renewed, ensuring you are always prepared to wield its unpredictable magic in the battles ahead.
