Base Class: Ranger
Your skill as a ranger and your innate connection to the wild have led you to something truly extraordinary—a young dragon. This bond between you and the dragon is forged in trust and mutual respect, and as you grow together, the dragon matures from a playful, four-legged companion to a majestic, winged predator, powerful enough to carry you into battle. Along the way, its strength and the magic within its scales become an extension of your own abilities.
Drakewarden Origin
The circumstances that led you to bond with a young dragon are as unique as the dragon itself. Consider the following origins or create your own.
| d6 | Origin |
|---|---|
| 1 | You discovered a dragon egg and nurtured it until it hatched, forming a deep bond with the hatchling. |
| 2 | A secretive order of rangers taught you the ways of working alongside dragons, introducing you to your draconic companion. |
| 3 | A dragon entrusted you with one of its offspring, charging you to raise and guide the young creature. |
| 4 | You stumbled upon a dragon nest and earned the trust of the lone hatchling by protecting it from harm. |
| 5 | You read an ancient inscription that awakened dormant magic within an unhatched dragon egg. |
| 6 | You rescued a wounded young dragon and nursed it back to health, creating a lasting partnership. |
Level 3: Draconic Gift
The bond you share with your dragon forges a connection to dragonkind, granting you draconic insight and a commanding presence. You gain the following benefits:
- Thaumaturgy. You learn the thaumaturgy cantrip, which is a ranger spell for you.
- Tongue of Dragons. You learn to speak, read, and write Draconic or one other language of your choice.
Level 3: Dragon Companion
As an action, you can magically summon the dragon that is bound to you. It appears in an unoccupied space of your choice within 30 feet of you.
The dragon is friendly to you and your companions, and it obeys your commands. See its game statistics in the accompanying Dragon Companion stat block, which uses your proficiency bonus (PB) in several places. Whenever you summon the dragon, choose a damage type listed in its Draconic Essence trait. You can determine the cosmetic characteristics of the dragon, such as its color, scale texture, or any visible effects of its Draconic Essence; your choice has no effect on its game statistics.
In combat, the dragon shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or another action of your choice. If you are incapacitated, the dragon can take any action it chooses, not just Dodge.
The dragon remains until it is reduced to 0 hit points, until you use this feature to summon the dragon again, or until you die. Anything the dragon was wearing or carrying is left behind when it vanishes.
Once you summon the dragon, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher to summon it.

Actions
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 plus PB to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1d6 plus PB piercing damage.
Reactions
Infused Strikes. When another creature within 30 feet of the drake that it can see hits a target with a weapon attack, the drake infuses the strike with its essence, causing the target to take an extra 1d6 damage of the type determined by its Draconic Essence.
Level 7: Bond of Fang and Scale
The bond you share with your dragon intensifies, enhancing its physical capabilities and granting you additional benefits. When you summon your dragon, it grows to Large size and gains wings, granting it a flying speed equal to its walking speed. The dragon can't use its flying speed while carrying you as a mount.
In addition, while your dragon is summoned, you and it gain the following benefits:
- Draconic Mount. The dragon can carry you as a mount if you are Medium or smaller. While mounted, the dragon cannot use its fly speed.
- Magic Fang. The dragon’s Bite attack counts as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks.
- Draconic Breath. The dragon can unleash a breath weapon. As an action, it exhales destructive energy in either a 15-foot cone or a 30-foot line. The breath weapon deals damage equal to 1d6 × PB of the dragon’s Draconic Essence type. Creatures in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC, taking full damage on a failed save or half as much on a success. The dragon can use this breath weapon a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per long rest.
- Resistance. You gain resistance to the damage type chosen for the dragon’s Draconic Essence.
Level 11: Augmented Dragon’s Breath
Your dragon’s breath weapon becomes even more potent. As an action, you or your dragon can unleash a powerful breath weapon in a 30-foot cone. Choose acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison damage (this can differ from the dragon’s Draconic Essence). Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC:
- Failed Save: 8d6 damage.
- Successful Save: Half as much damage.
This damage increases to 10d6 at 15th level in this class. Once you use this feature, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend a spell slot of 3rd level or higher to use it again.
Mounted Flight: Additionally, when you use your dragon as a mount, it is no longer prohibited from using the flying speed of Bond of Fang and Scale.
Level 15: Perfected Bond
Your bond with your dragon reaches its peak. While your dragon is summoned, you and it gain the following benefits:
- Empowered Bite. The dragon’s Bite attack deals an extra 2d6 damage of the type chosen for its Draconic Essence (for a total of 3d6 extra damage).
- Huge Dragon. The dragon grows to Huge size and can carry large creatures while flying without restriction.
- Reflexive Resistance. When either you or the dragon takes damage while you’re within 30 feet of each other, you can use your reaction to give yourself or the dragon resistance to that instance of damage. You can use this reaction a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Posted Aug 19, 2025Hi. If its no trouble. Could you make a 2014 version of this subclass version? I have been trying to make it myself but implementing the stat sheet for the dragon has been convoluted.
