Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

This subclass is a play on a pet build. You gain a bird companion that you can command to aid you in and out of combat. The bird companion has its own unique stat block and can take any form you like as long as it is a bird and is size small. The other features aim to buff the bird in combat and add utility and defense to your kit.

Bird Companion

At 3rd level, you gain a bird ally that is friendly towards you and your companions. It obeys your commands and fights by your side. Refer to its stat block below, which uses your proficiency bonus in several places. You can determine what kind of bird it is as long as it is appropriate to the stat block.

In combat, the bird acts during your turn. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, the bird can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

If the bird has died within the last hour, you can use your action to touch it and expend a spell slot of level 1 or higher. The bird returns to life after 1 minute with all its hit points restored.

Shared Sense

As an action, you can see through your bird's eyes and hear what it hears until the start of your next turn, gaining the benefits of any special senses it has. During the time, you are deafened and blinded with regard to your own senses.

Birds of a Feather

At 7th level, the bond you share with your bird intensifies, strengthening both of you.

You both receive the following benefits:

Magical Training: Your bird's attacks are now considered magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.

Dive Bomb: If the bird moves at least 20 feet vertically toward a creature and hits with its shred attack on the same turn, the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against your spell save DC, or be blinded until the start of your next turn.

Has Your Back: As long as your bird is within 30 feet of you, it can use its reaction to grant an additional d4 to any saving throw you make. Once it uses this reaction, it cannot do so again until you finish a short or long rest.

Harrier

Starting at 11th level, your bird becomes a menace on the battlefield.

When you command the bird to take the Attack action, it may now attack twice or attack once and use the Help action.

Beak Performance

At 15th level, your duo's power has reached its peak.

You now both benefit from the following:

Perfected Bond: You can now communicate telepathically with your bird, as long as you are within 1 mile of it. In addition, you no longer need to use a Bonus Action on your turn to command your bird.

Empowered Shred: Your bird's shred attack now deals an additional 1d4 slashing damage.

Reflexive Resistance: When either you or your bird takes damage while you're within 30 feet of each other, you can use your reaction to give yourself or your bird resistance to that instance of damage. You can use this reaction a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
