Base Class: Barbarian
Path of the War Dancer
Barbarians who walk the Path of the War Dancer are masters of weaving primal magic into their battle frenzy, becoming graceful whirlwinds of steel and fury. They channel their rage into a fluid dance of death, their movements blurring the line between martial prowess and arcane power.
* Bonus Proficiencies:
* When you choose this path at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in the Performance skill and with one type of one-handed melee weapon of your choice.
* War Dance:
* At 3rd level, you learn to enter a trance-like state fueled by your rage. As a bonus action on your turn, you can enter a War Dance. While dancing, you gain the following benefits:
* You gain a bonus to your AC equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of +1).
* Your walking speed increases by 10 feet.
* You can use a bonus action to make a weapon attack against a creature within 5 feet of you.
* You can remain in the War Dance for a number of rounds equal to your proficiency bonus. It ends early if you are incapacitated, if you fall unconscious, or if you end your rage. You can also end your War Dance on your turn as a bonus action.
* Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
* Whirling Strikes:
* At 6th level, your attacks become a blur of motion. When you take the Attack action on your turn while in your War Dance, you can make one additional attack as part of that action.
* Dance of Deflection:
* At 10th level, you learn to anticipate and deflect blows with supernatural precision. When a creature hits you with a melee attack while you are in your War Dance, you can use your reaction to add your Charisma modifier (minimum of +1) to your AC for that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss you.
* Dance of the Serpent:
* At 14th level, your movements become serpentine and unpredictable. While you are in your War Dance, your movement doesn't provoke opportunity attacks.
Design Notes:
* This subclass focuses on enhancing the Barbarian's combat abilities with agility, speed, and defensive maneuvers, reminiscent of the Blade Singer's focus on finesse and magical enhancement.
* The War Dance is similar to the Bladesong in that it provides a temporary boost to combat prowess, but it is fueled by rage instead of arcane magic.
* The subclass uses Charisma as its spellcasting ability, differentiating it from other Barbarian subclasses and emphasizing the performative aspect of the War Dance.
Level 3: War dance
This is the core feature. It's a limited resource (once per short or long rest) that transforms the barbarian into a whirling dervish of combat prowess.
* Bonus Action Activation: You can weave in and out of this state as needed, making it tactically flexible.
* Duration: It lasts a decent amount of time, scaling with your proficiency bonus, so you can make the most of it in combat.
* Benefits:
* Enhanced AC: Makes you harder to hit, emphasizing agility and defensive movement.
* Increased Speed: Lets you close with enemies quickly or reposition easily.
* Bonus Action Attack: Allows you to weave in extra attacks, increasing your damage output.
Level 6: Whirling strikes
Whirling Strikes (6th level): This significantly boosts your damage output while in your War Dance, letting you make an extra attack with the Attack action. This emphasizes the flurry of blows characteristic of the subclass.
Level 10: Dance of deflection
* Dance of Deflection (10th level): This powerful defensive ability lets you use your reaction to become even harder to hit when attacked in melee. It reinforces the idea of anticipatory movement and deflecting blows with almost supernatural grace
Level 14: Dance of the serpent
* Dance of the Serpent (14th level): This capstone ability provides incredible battlefield mobility. You can weave through enemy lines without fear of opportunity attacks, making you incredibly difficult to pin down or control. It really sells the image of a slippery, untouchable warrior.
