Artificer
Base Class: Artificer

An Arcane Gunslinger specializes in using a combination of magic and metal to hurl energy, projectiles, and explosions on a battlefield. This Gunslinger is not like any other. They don't just rely on their skills with a firearm. They have realized that firearms can benefit from magic just like any other archaic weapon. Why use a sword or a bow when you get the power of a firearm mixed with the power of magic.

Tool Proficiency

3rd-level Arcane Gunslinger feature

You gain proficiency with Smith's Tools. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of artisan’s tools of your choice.

You also gain proficiency with firearms and can use them as an arcane focus. If you roll a natural 1 on an attack roll from a spell cast using your firearm as a focus, or when firing your firearm normally, it breaks. The mending spell must be cast on the weapon in order to repair it. The firearm can not function as a focus or be fired normally until mended.

Finally, if you create an infusion that gives your firearm a bonus to hit, that bonus is added to spell attacks and saving throws, when you cast a spell while using your firearm as a focus.

Arcane Gunslinger Spells

3rd-level Arcane Gunslinger feature

You always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Arcane Gunslinger Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare. Your tactical training with magic grants you access to the Ranger spell list as well.

In addition to the spells in this table, you also learn mending. If you already know this cantrip, you may learn a different cantrip from the Artificer spell list instead.

Quick Draw

3rd-Level Arcane Gunslinger Feature

At 3rd level, your experience with the rare weapons known as firearm’s lets you maneuver them and fire faster. Whenever you roll for initiative and you may add your intelligence modifier to your initiative rolls. In addition, when you roll for initiative, you can use your reaction to fire a shot from a loaded fire arm you are wielding.

You can also stow a firearm, then draw another firearm as a single object interaction on your turn.

Extra Attack

5th-level Arcane Gunslinger feature

Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. In addition, when you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of the attacks with a casting of one cantrip that requires an action to cast and uses your intelligence modifier.

Ammunition Focus

9th-level Arcane Gunslinger feature

Starting at 9th level, your experience with firearms grants you the ability to use not just your firearm, but also your ammunition as an arcane conduit.

When you use your firearm as a focus, you may expend 1 piece of ammunition to add your firearm’s short range to the range of any spell (including touch spells) granted to you from this class.

When you use this ability, spells that require a “melee” spell attack can be cast at the short range added from your firearm. Cantrips that require a melee weapon as a material cost can substitute your ammunition for their material cost instead.

Magic and Metal Mastery

15th-level Arcane Gunslinger Feature

You are a master of mixing magic with metal. You can fire your weapon in the blink of an eye and sling spells almost as fast as you can pull the trigger. You are granted the following features when using your arcane firearm.

  • You can attack three times, instead of twice, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.
  • If you cast a leveled spell as an action, you can make one attack, using your arcane firearm, as a bonus action.
  • You score a critical hit on an attack roll of 18 - 20. This includes casting a spell through your firearm, or firing it normally.
  • You can cast the Mending cantrip using your reaction a number of times per day equal to your intelligence modifier. You regain all expended uses when you take a long rest.
