Base Class: Rogue
Rogue Subclass: Phantom Veil
(The Specters of the Battlefield, Wielders of Fear and the Dead.)
The Phantom Veil Rogue exists between life and death, striking terror into enemies with spectral projections and spirit-bound power. Unlike assassins who rely on steel, they separate their spirit from their body to attack where enemies cannot defend.
They do not simply commune with spirits—they bind them, bargain with them, and channel their will. In exchange, they suffer psychic and necrotic wounds, sacrificing pieces of themselves to the beyond.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths:
✔ Expands Sneak Attack to work without ally positioning, making it more flexible.
✔ Possession mechanic allows powerful mind control, creating unique battlefield opportunities.
✔ Spirit Sustenance provides sustainability, ensuring long-term viability.
✔ Wraithborn Ascension is a powerful but balanced transformation—high reward, high risk.
✔ Unique combination of stealth, spirit projection, and psychic terror.
Weaknesses:
✖ High-risk, high-reward—constantly sacrifices HP to use abilities.
✖ Possession has limitations—requires an intelligent creature and can't be sustained long.
✖ Self-inflicted damage from Spirit Sustenance and Wraithborn Ascension means healing is crucial.
✖ Requires strategic play—reckless use of Spectral Separation can leave the Rogue vulnerable.
Comparison & Uniqueness vs. 5e 2024 Rogue Subclasses
✔ Sneak Attack without ally positioning makes it distinct from Assassin.
✔ Possession effect gives battlefield manipulation unlike Soulknife or Phantom.
✔ Spirit Sustenance provides endurance, keeping it from being a pure "glass cannon."
✔ Balanced self-damage mechanic ensures high-risk, high-reward gameplay.
✔ Wraithborn transformation provides a late-game "super mode," making it unique among Rogues.

Level 3: Spectral Separation
Level 3 — Spectral Separation (Core Mechanic: Spirit Projection & Sneak Attack)
At 3rd level, you learn how to separate your spirit from your body, allowing you to strike at an enemy’s mind directly while remaining unseen.
- As a Bonus Action, you can detach your spirit from your body for 1 minute or until you become incapacitated.
- Your spirit may move up to 30 feet away but remains tethered to your physical form.
- While separated, your spirit can make a Spectral Strike (melee weapon attack) against a creature you can see within 30 feet.
- This attack triggers Sneak Attack, even if no ally is nearby.
- The attack deals Psychic damage instead of the weapon’s normal damage type.
- The target must make a Wisdom Saving Throw (DC = 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Dexterity or Intelligence Mod).
- On a failure, they are Frightened until the start of your next turn.
Drawback:
- When your spirit returns to your body, you suffer 2d6 Psychic damage.
- You may use this ability a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest.
Level 9: Possession of the Fallen
Level 9 — Possession of the Fallen (Command the Weak-Willed)
At 9th level, the spirits that linger on the battlefield are no longer just observers—they become your tools.
- As an Action, you can use the spirits to possess the body of another creature within 30 feet that has an Intelligence of 8 or higher.
- The target must make a Charisma Saving Throw (DC = 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Intelligence or Charisma Mod).
- On a failure, they are possessed for up to 1 minute or until they take damage.
- While possessed, you mentally command their movements (no actions required).
- The target cannot use reactions.
- Once per turn, you may use your Bonus Action to force them to attack a creature of your choice.
- If you attack the possessed creature or force them into a dangerous situation (e.g., off a cliff), they immediately make another saving throw.
Drawback:
- Using this ability costs you 1d6 Psychic and 1d6 Necrotic damage.
- This ability may be used once per Long Rest or regained by sacrificing Hit Dice during a Short Rest.
Phantom’s Toll
Level 13 — Phantom’s Toll (Greater Spectral Projection & Spirit Sustenance)
At 13th level, your Spectral Separation lasts longer, strikes harder, and grants sustainability.
- Spectral Separation now lasts up to 10 minutes instead of 1.
- Your Spectral Strike now causes Frightened enemies to suffer Disadvantage on all Saving Throws while they remain Frightened.
- Spirit Sustenance: When you deal Psychic or Necrotic damage (choose one at the start of a Long Rest), you may restore hit points equal to:
- The damage dealt + Proficiency Bonus + Charisma Modifier.
- This effect triggers once per turn and cannot heal you above half your maximum HP.
Level 17: Wraithborn Ascension
Level 17 — Wraithborn Ascension (Final Transformation: Become a Wraith)
At 17th level, you fully transcend the boundary between life and death, becoming a living wraith.
- As a Bonus Action, you can fully transform into a Wraith for 1 minute.
- While in this form, you gain the following benefits:
- Incorporeal Movement: You can move through creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain.
- Immunity to Non-Magical Attacks: You become immune to all non-magical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.
- Wraith’s Terror: Enemies within 10 feet of you must make a Wisdom Saving Throw (DC = 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Charisma or Intelligence Mod). On a failure, they are Frightened for 1 minute.
- Spectral Attacks: Your melee attacks now deal Psychic damage instead of their normal damage type.
- Spirit Sustenance remains active, healing you for damage dealt (within the cap).
- Drawback:
- Each turn you remain in Wraith form, you take 2d6 Psychic and 2d6 Necrotic damage as the spirits demand payment.
- You can use this ability once per Long Rest.
