Base Class: Wizard
Hedge mages are the wizards that are found in dark alleys, grimy taverns, and black markets. They practice magic under the noses of the Arcane Inquisition, finding creative ways to hide their arcane skills to not be arrested. Their spellbooks are recorded in unique forms and their spells are cast subtly, allowing them to weave magic undetected. No two hedge mages use the same magics or techniques; some record their spells in fabrics, beads, or tattoos, and some watch and mimic the magics of clerics, druids, warlocks, or other spellcasters.
As a hedge mage, you understand the dangers of being caught by the Arcane Inquisition. You may have creation forged magic certifications, fake holy symbols, or even full false identities to alleviate suspicion of being an arcane practitioner
Disguised Spellbook
When you choose this tradition at 2nd level, you transcribe the contents of your spellbook into a form that isn’t easily identifiable as a spellbook, such as tattoos over your skin, a set of cards, beads or stones, patterns woven into fabric, or written in a book in a code you created.
While you are holding or wearing your Disguised Spellbook, it grants you the following benefits:
- You can use the Disguised Spellbook as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells.
- Your Disguised Spellbook can only be identified as a spellbook with an identify spell.
- When you cast a wizard spell, you can cast it without any somatic or verbal components. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
If necessary, you can replace your Disguised Spellbook over the course of a short rest by using one type of Artisan’s Tools and the same materials used in your original Disguised Spellbook. At the end of the rest, your spellbook’s contents are inscribed into the Disguised Spellbook. If the previous Disguised Spellbook still existed somewhere, all the spells vanish from it.
Misleading Magecraft
When you choose this tradition at 2nd level, you gain proficiency with Deception, Persuasion, Sleight of Hand, Stealth, or Thieves’ Tools.
Additionally, when you make a skill check or use a tool with Dexterity, Intelligence, or Charisma, you can expend a spell slot to gain a bonus to that skill check or tool check equal to the level of spell slot expended.
Deception
You gain proficiency with Deception.
Persuasion
You gain proficiency with Persuasion.
Sleight of Hand
You gain proficiency with Sleight of Hand.
Stealth

Spell Deflection
Beginning at 6th level, when a creature you can see within 30 feet of you uses a magical effect or casts a spell against you of a level for which you have spell slots, you can use your reaction to divert the effect or spell, provided that another creature is within the effect's range. The attacker must make an Intelligence saving throw against your wizard spell save DC. On a failed save, the attacker must target the creature that is closest to it, not including you or itself. If multiple creatures are closest, the attacker chooses which one to target. The attacker doesn’t know why its magical effect or spell was deflected, and nothing indicates that you caused it. On a successful save, you can’t use this feature on the attacker again until you finish a long rest.
You must choose to use this feature before knowing whether the magical effect or spell works. Creatures that can detect lies are immune to this effect.
Obscured to Inquisition
At 10th level, you add the arcanist’s magic aura and dispel magic spells to your Disguised Spellbook, if they are not there already. You can cast either spell without expending a spell slot. Once you cast dispel magic in this way, you can’t do so again until you finish a short or long rest, though you can still cast it normally using an available spell slot.
Unorthodox Arcana
At 14th level, you may add two spells of your choice that do not appear on the wizard spell list to your Disguised Spellbook. A spell you choose must be of a level you can cast, as shown on the Wizard table, or a cantrip. The chosen spells count as wizard spells for you, though cantrips chosen this way do not count against the number of Cantrips Known on the Wizard table.
