Base Class: Fighter
“From the moment we stand shield to shield, we are one.”
— Traditional Hoplite Maxim
“It is not the multitude of men that makes the strength of an army, but the discipline and order of its ranks.”
— Xenophon, Anabasis
“Spartans do not ask how many are the enemy, but where they are.”
— Plutarch, Sayings of the Spartans
The Aegis Myrmidon is a warrior steeped in ancient martial tradition, trained in the art of precision strikes, shielded defense, and battlefield dominance. Inspired by the elite spear-bearing warriors of classical antiquity—hoplites, Myrmidons, and phalanx fighters—they represent an unbreakable wall of discipline and skill.
Unlike reckless berserkers or lone dueling swordsmen, the Aegis Myrmidon excels in formation and tactical combat. Their signature weapon, the Spear of Aegis, is a mystical weapon bound to their soul—a conduit of martial prowess and divine focus. As they grow in strength, this spear becomes an extension of their will, gaining magical enhancements and new tactical advantages.
Clad in shield and spear, the Aegis Myrmidon is the center of any line formation, offering defensive auras and retaliation strikes. They are trained to hold ground against charging hordes, pierce enemy defenses with reach and precision, and support allies with unwavering resolve. Their Phalanx Stance allows them to become a mobile fortress—supporting allies, retaliating against foes, and turning enemy aggression against itself.
Later in their career, an Aegis Myrmidon becomes a true master of battlefield control. With supernatural discipline, they repel advances, tear through lines with reach and force, and stand as a symbol of order in chaos. Whether guarding kings or leading charges into enemy formations, the Aegis Myrmidon thrives where the fighting is thickest—and where the line must never break.
Level 3: Spear of Aegis
At 3rd level, you dedicate yourself to mastering the ancient art of spear-and-shield combat. You gain proficiency with the spear, trident, or other polearm that can be wielded one-handed, if you do not already have it.
You also craft or claim a sacred, personal weapon known as the Spear of Aegis, which has the below properties. You can have only one bonded weapon.
- Bonded Weapon: As a bonus action, you can summon or dismiss your Spear of Aegis. If thrown, it magically returns to your hand at the end of the turn.
- Magical: It counts as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.
- Scaling Bonus: It gains a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls. This increases to +2 at 10th level and +3 at 18th level.
While wielding your Spear of Aegis and a shield:
- You gain a +1 bonus to AC.
- You have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks and saving throws to resist being moved, knocked prone, or disarmed.
Level 3: Phalanx Stance
You can enter a combat-ready stance as a bonus action. While in Phalanx Stance, which lasts for 1 minute or until you're incapacitated, you gain the following benefits:
- When you take the Attack action, you may make one additional melee attack as a bonus action.
- Allies within 5 feet of you gain +1 AC while you’re conscious and wielding a shield.
- When a creature misses you with a melee attack, you may move 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
You can use Phalanx Stance a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum once) per long rest.
Level 7: Shield Riposte
When a creature misses you with a melee attack and you’re wielding a shield, you may use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against that creature with your Spear of Aegis.
Level 10: Piercing Advance
When you move at least 10 feet straight toward a target and hit it with your Spear of Aegis, you deal extra damage equal to your Strength modifier and ignore half cover.
In addition, creatures provoke opportunity attacks from you when they enter your reach, not just when they leave it
Level 15: Aegis Surge
As a bonus action, you can surge with disciplined power. For 1 minute:
- Your movement speed increases by 10 feet.
- You gain reach with your Spear of Aegis.
- You may make one additional attack when you take the Attack action.
You can use this feature once per long rest, or by expending your Second Wind.
Level 18: Unbreakable Wall
You and friendly creatures within 5 feet of you have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from non-magical weapons while you are wielding your Spear of Aegis and a shield.
