Base Class: Barbarian
Inner gates are built in constrains in our bodies that limit our full potential. Barbarians from this path learned how to use their rage to open some of these gates, giving them extraordinary abilities. Some legends even talk about barbarians that can open all their 5 inner gates in battle to annihilate their enemies
Inspired by characters like Goku from dragon ball and Lee from Naruto, this subclass goal is to give the player that power fantasy warrior that transcends the limits of a normal human being.
Mechanically speaking, this subclass gives barbarians something to do with their bonus action each turn, becoming stronger as the fight goes on. In addition, it gives players more choices during battle (what gates to open and in which order), making the class more fun to play. It also gives a reason to stay in the class , instead of multiclassing, to gain access to the final and most powerful gate. This subclass really delivers on that super saiyan fantasy with its gate of ultimate power!
Inner Gates
When you select this path at 3rd level, you gain the ability to open inner gates, pushing your body to its limits to increase your power in battle.
While raging, you can use a bonus action to open an inner gate. When you open the first gate, you take 1d4 force damage. This damage increases to 1d6 when you open the second gate, 1d8 on the third, 1d10 on the fourth and 1d12 on the fifth. This damage bypasses temporary hit points and it cannot be prevented nor resisted in any way.
Each gate grants you a different benefit:
- Gate of speed: your barbarian Fast Movement increases by 5 feet per opened gate.
- Gate of might: your Rage Damage increases by 1 per opened gate.
- Gate of resilience: at the beginning of your turn, you gain a number of temporary hit points equal to four times the number of opened gates. You lose these temporary hit points when your rage ends.
- Gate of wrath: whenever a creature hits you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to make them take 1d4 points of force damage per opened gate.
You can open up to 2 gates per rage, and all opened gates close when your rage ends.
Rageless Connection
At 6th level, your connection with your inner self becomes strong enough that you can now gain some benefits from an inner gate even when it`s closed. Choose one of your inner gates, each of them will give you a different benefit:
- Gate of speed: you gain a swimming speed and a climbing speed equal to your movement speed.
- Gate of might: Your carrying capacity (including maximum load and maximum lift) is doubled, and you have advantage on Strength checks made to push, pull, lift, or break objects.
- Gate of resilience: you have advantage on saving throws against disease and poison.
- Gate of wrath: you can add your constitution modifier to intimidation tests and to wisdom saving throws against being frightened.
You can only receive benefits from one inner gate this way, and the benefit lasts until you decide to end it or until you chose a different gate for this ability. You can change that inner gate when you take a short or long rest.
In addition, you can now open up to 3 inner gates per rage.
Gateway Rage
At 10th level, when you enter your rage, you can open the inner gate from your Rageless Connection as part of the same bonus action.
In addition, you can now open up to 4 inner gates per rage.
Gate of Ultimate Power
At level 14th, you can now open all of your inner gates while raging. In addition, you gain access to the 5th and final inner gate:
Gate of ultimate power: This gate unleashes your body full potential and makes you a menacing presence in the battlefield.
You can only open this gate when your other 4 gates are already opened.
When you open this gate, a burst of energy emanates from you, releasing the power of all your gates as an explosion of pure power to everything around you. Everyone and everything withing 5 feet of you take 1d4 + 1d6 + 1d8 + 1d10 + 1d12 force damage.
In addition, this gate grants you the following benefits:
- You gain a fly speed equal to your movement speed.
- You can use your bonus action to make a single melee weapon attack.
- You gain resistance to all damage types.
