Monk
Base Class: Monk

A Monk Subclass Forged in Fire and Fury

"Justice will be served, even if I must drag my enemies through the depths of hell itself."

Embrace the Flames of Retribution

The Warrior of the Vengeful Specter is not your typical monk. While others seek inner peace and harmony, you have chosen a darker path—one paved with supernatural fire and driven by an unquenchable thirst for justice. Whether you witnessed the destruction of your village, lost loved ones to evil, or were personally wronged by those who abuse their power, your tragedy has awakened something otherworldly within you.

This subclass transforms the traditional monk into a terrifying agent of vengeance, wielding chain weapons wreathed in spectral flame and capable of disappearing into shadow only to reappear behind your enemies like death itself. You are the nightmare that haunts the wicked, the burning judgment that cannot be escaped.

Why Play This Subclass?

High Mobility Combat: Between your extended whip reach, enemy pulling, and teleportation abilities, you control positioning like no other monk. You decide where the fight happens.

Escalating Damage: Your damage output increases dramatically against enemies who dare attack you or your party. Turn their aggression into their doom.

Cinematic Moments: Few things are more satisfying than teleporting behind an enemy, setting them ablaze with hellfire, then watching them burn while you vanish again. Every combat feels like a supernatural thriller.

Unique Playstyle: This isn't a support monk or a defensive tank—you're a supernatural assassin focused on dealing devastating damage while remaining mobile and unpredictable.

Thematic Richness: Perfect for characters with tragic backstories, those seeking justice, or anyone who wants to play a monk with a darker edge. Your powers have a cost, and that makes them feel meaningful.

Perfect Character Concepts

  • The Survivor: Last member of a destroyed clan, trained in forbidden techniques to hunt down those responsible
  • The Fallen Hero: Once a righteous warrior, now walking a darker path after witnessing too much injustice
  • The Bound Spirit: A living person who made a pact with vengeful spirits to gain the power to right wrongs
  • The Reluctant Avenger: Someone who never wanted these powers but was chosen by supernatural forces to be their instrument

Combat Tactics

Open fights by using your whip's reach to pull dangerous enemies out of position, then teleport in for devastating Hellfire Strikes. Use your mobility to stay away from heavy hitters while marking multiple enemies with burning vengeance. In your Avatar form, become the center of a whirling firestorm, teleporting between clusters of enemies while your explosive attacks devastate entire groups.

Your ki points fuel both offense and mobility, creating interesting tactical decisions about when to spend resources for positioning versus damage. The fact that your damage increases against enemies who attack your party creates a satisfying "punish the aggressor" dynamic.

The Price of Power

This subclass embraces themes of sacrifice and consequence. Your power comes from pain, your strength from tragedy. You're not seeking enlightenment—you're seeking justice, even if it burns you from within. This makes for rich roleplay opportunities and internal character conflict.

Ready to embrace the flames of vengeance? The Warrior of the Vengeful Specter awaits those with the conviction to wield supernatural fire in the name of justice.

Level 3: Kunai Chain

3rd-level Warrior of the Vengeful Specter feature

You master the use of chain weapons imbued with spectral energy. You gain proficiency with whips, and whips count as monk weapons for you. When you hit with a whip, you can spend 1 ki point to pull the target up to 10 feet closer to you if it is Large or smaller. The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pulled toward you.

Additionally, when you use your whip, its reach increases to 20 feet, and you can use Dexterity instead of Strength for attack and damage rolls with it.

Level 3: Hellfire Strike

3rd-level Warrior of the Vengeful Specter feature

You can channel supernatural fire through your attacks. When you hit with an unarmed strike or monk weapon, you can spend 1 ki point to deal additional fire damage equal to your Wisdom modifier. If the target is a creature that has dealt damage to you or one of your allies since the end of your last turn, the additional fire damage increases to your Wisdom modifier + your proficiency bonus.

Level 6: Spectral Teleport

6th-level Warrior of the Vengeful Specter feature

You can briefly phase into the spectral realm to reposition yourself. As a bonus action, you can spend 2 ki points to teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. Immediately after teleporting, you can make one unarmed strike or attack with a monk weapon as part of the same bonus action.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Level 11: Burning Vengeance

11th-level Warrior of the Vengeful Specter feature

Your supernatural fire burns with the intensity of your convictions. When you use your Hellfire Strike feature, the target must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the target is marked with spectral flames for 1 minute. While marked, the target takes fire damage equal to your Wisdom modifier at the start of each of its turns. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.

Additionally, you have resistance to fire damage, and you can see normally in darkness, both magical and nonmagical, to a distance of 120 feet.

Level 17: Avatar of Retribution

17th-level Warrior of the Vengeful Specter feature

You can assume a terrifying spectral form. As an action, you can spend 5 ki points to transform for 1 minute. While transformed:

  • You gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed, and you can hover
  • Your unarmed strikes and monk weapons deal fire damage instead of their normal damage type
  • When you hit with an unarmed strike or monk weapon, the target and all creatures within 5 feet of it must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking fire damage equal to your Wisdom modifier on a failure
  • You can use your Spectral Teleport feature without expending uses from your proficiency bonus limit
  • You shed bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
