Base Class: Paladin
The Oath of the Ancient Dragon is a bond a paladin has made with a wise dragon at some point in their existence. paladins don't take this oath but are given it as an act of gratitude from a Dragon. Their armour is bejewelled with precious gems and dragon scales from the wearers chosen dragon or, if it fits with what happened in their lifetime, of the type of dragon that offered them this oath.
Level 3: Oath of the Ancient Dragon Spells
The magic of your oath ensures you always have certain spells ready; when you reach a Paladin level specified in the Oath of the Ancient Dragon Spells table, you thereafter always have the listed spells prepared.
| Paladin Level | Spells |
|---|---|
| 3 | Bless, Shield of Faith |
| 5 | Aid, Knock |
| 9 | Wind wall, Clairvoyance |
| 13 | Charm monster, Guardian of Faith |
| 17 | Dawn, Telekinesis |
Level 3: Draconic Breath
You are imbued with the breath of a Dragonborn. Choose a Draconic Ancestry of your choice and gain the breath weapon corresponding to that Dragon type. When first gaining this trait your breath weapon deals 1d10 of the damage type of your Draconic Ancestry. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus you Constitution modifier and proficiency Bonus) or take the 1d10 damage. On a successful save the target takes half damage.
The damage increases as you gain more levels. It increases at the same rate as a normal Dragonborn, as seen on page 187.
If your species is already a Dragonborn, then your breath weapon deals an extra 1d8 plus your Proficiency Bonus.
Level 7: Scale Defence
The dragon whose power you are imbued with provides you with scales which form on your body. These scales give you an Armour Class of 12 plus your Charisma and Proficiency Bonus. This counts as natural armour. This Armour Class is not provided if wearing armour.
You are able to withdraw these scales as a Bonus Action and make them come out again as an Action.
Level 15: Draconic Flight
You begin to take the form of a dragon. You gain either a tail, horns, sharp teeth, glowing eyes, claws, or ears which point skywards. You can either choose one of these attribute or roll 1d6.
In addition to this physical feature you also sprout wings which give you a flying speed equal to your speed.
If you already have a fly speed then your wings become Draconic and larger. This increase in size doubles your fly speed.
Level 20: Holy Steed
As an Action you can do a 1 minute ritual to summon a Young Dragon whose type corresponds with your Draconic Ancestry. As a Bonus Action you can command the Dragon to take an Action. You can do this a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. You gain all expended uses once you finish a Long rest.
If you choose to ride on the Dragon (via air, water, or land) it only costs one Action.
