Base Class: Paladin
Paladins who swear the Oath of the Burning Will are paragons of unwavering mental clarity and psionic might. Their conviction is not merely spiritual—it is forged in the crucible of thought, honed through meditation and psychic training. These paladins believe the mind is the final bastion against all corruption, and through discipline, fire, and righteous will, they become beacons of psychic purity and judgment.
Many among their number are trained by psionic orders within House Breemall or recruited into the Veilwardens. Some awaken to their power after resisting mind-dominating horrors, vowing to never again let their thoughts be shackled.
Tenets of the Burning Will
Though each order varies, paladins of this oath typically uphold these ideals:
-
Will is Strength. Discipline of the mind is the truest power. Without clarity, all else falters.
-
Silence the Intruder. No foreign thought shall take root. All mental invaders must be purged.
-
Temper the Flame. Power is not rage, but focus. Use your gifts wisely, or be consumed by them.
-
Illuminate the Shadows. Let no deception or illusion remain unchallenged. Bring truth to light.
Level 3: Oath of the Burning Will Spells
The magic of your oath ensures you always have certain spells ready; when you reach a Paladin level specified in the Oath of the Burning Will Spells table, you thereafter always have the listed spells prepared.
| Paladin Level | Spells |
|---|---|
| 3 | Dissonant Whispers, Shield of Faith |
| 5 | Detect Thoughts, Silence |
| 9 | Dispel Magic, Counterspell |
| 13 | Resilient Sphere, Greater Invisibility |
| 17 | Synaptic Static, Wall of Force |
Level 3: Channel Divinity
Burning Smite.
When you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can use your Channel Divinity to sear their mind. The attack deals an additional 2d8 psychic damage, and the target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be silenced (unable to speak or use verbal components) and unable to benefit from telepathy or sending for 1 minute.
Unbreakable Will.
As a bonus action, you invoke your inner discipline. For 1 minute, you and all allies within 10 feet gain advantage on saving throws against being charmed, frightened, or stunned. In addition, your concentration on any spell cannot be broken by taking damage during this time.
Level 7: Aura of Mental Clarity
Starting at 7th level, your focused will projects an aura that sharpens perception and shields the mind from subtle influence.
You and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you gain advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws made to resist illusions, detect hidden creatures, or pierce magical deception (such as invisibility, disguise self, or hallucinatory terrain). Additionally, creatures in the aura can’t be surprised unless they are unconscious.
At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.
Level 15: Mindfire Rebuke (15th level)
When a creature targets you with a spell or effect that would read your mind, dominate your will, or frighten you, you can use your reaction to unleash a pulse of psychic backlash. The attacker takes 3d10 psychic damage and must make a Constitution saving throw or lose concentration (if concentrating on a spell).
Level 20: Will Incarnate (20th level)
At 20th level, you become the embodiment of focused thought and unbreakable resolve. Using your action, you can enter a state of Burning Will for 1 minute. You gain the following benefits:
-
You are immune to psychic damage, charm, fear, and mind reading.
-
You gain truesight to 60 feet.
-
Your weapon attacks deal an additional 1d10 psychic damage.
-
You can cast Dispel Magic once per round without expending a spell slot.
Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
