Base Class: Rogue
A rare breed of rogue, the Falconer works in close partnership with a trained avian companion. These cunning outcasts see the world through the keen eyes of their avian allies, using their bond to gain unparalleled awareness and execute perfectly coordinated strikes. Whether soaring above a battlefield to spot a weakness or diving to distract a foe, the Falconer's avian is more than a pet—it is an extension of their will and their most trusted accomplice.
Avian Companion
Starting at 3rd level, you learn to form a powerful bond with an avian that accompanies you on your adventures. Your companion can be an eagle, hawk, or owl (your choice of appearance). It has the statistics of a Hawk in the Monster Manual, with the following changes:
-
The avian can't be surprised, and it can move and take the Dodge or Help action on its own turn.
-
The avian’s hit point maximum is equal to your rogue level times 5.
-
The avian’s proficiency bonus is equal to your own.
-
The avian adds your proficiency bonus to its AC and to its attack rolls and damage rolls.
-
When your avian is within 10 feet of a target and you make a melee weapon attack against that target, you can use your bonus action to command your avian to use the Help action. This can be used to grant you advantage on the attack roll for your Sneak Attack.
-
Your avian does not require food or water, as it hunts on its own.
-
If your avian is reduced to 0 hit points, it falls unconscious and makes death saving throws as a player character. If it dies, you can spend 8 hours performing a ritual to find and bond with a new one.
Coordinated Assault
You and your avian have learned to strike as one. As a bonus action, you can command your avian to fly to a space within 30 feet of you. If it does, your next melee weapon attack against a target within 5 feet of your avian before the end of your turn deals an additional 1d6 piercing damage.
Evasive Dive
When you or an ally you can see within 30 feet of you are targeted by a ranged attack, you can use your reaction to command your avian to distract the attacker. The attack is made with disadvantage. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Apex Predator
Your bond with your avian is so complete that you move with the combined speed and lethal grace of a hunting avian. You can now use your Cunning Action to command your avian to take the Attack action, and it can now deliver Sneak Attack as if it were you, using your Sneak Attack dice.
In addition, as a bonus action, you can command your avian to gain the effect of a flyby attack for one turn. If it does, you can use your action to command it to make a coordinated dive. On a hit, the target is stunned until the end of its next turn.
