Sacred Oath: Oath of the Moon’s Beloved

Paladins who swear the Oath of the Moon’s Beloved serve Lillianna, goddess of the Moon, Mercy, and Shadows. They walk the knife’s edge between mercy and mercilessness: a ghost in the dark, sparing the worthy, erasing the unrepentant.

They are judges, executioners, and—when possible—healers of the broken, slipping through shadows to stand between the innocent and the horrors of the night.

Tenets of the Moon’s Beloved

Though words vary, paladins of this oath uphold these ideals:

Mercy for the Willing.
Offer mercy first. Give the lost a chance to turn back. Heal, shelter, and forgive those who truly seek it.

No Innocent Blood.
Never harm those who are helpless, ignorant, or coerced. Your power exists to shield them, not to scar them.

Merciless to the Unrepentant.
Those who revel in cruelty, corruption, or needless slaughter face the Moon’s shadow. When mercy is refused, let justice be absolute.

Walk the Night.
Step where others fear. Hide, strike, and suffer in the dark so others can live in the light.

Bear the Burden.
You carry the weight of every life you spare and every soul you end. Do not look away from that cost.

Level 3: Tenets of the Moon’s Beloved

Paladins who swear the Oath of the Moon’s Beloved serve Lillianna, goddess of the Moon, Mercy, and Shadows. Their tenets include:

  • Mercy for the Willing. Offer mercy first and aid those who truly seek redemption.

  • No Innocent Blood. Never willingly harm the innocent, the helpless, or the coerced.

  • Merciless to the Unrepentant. Visit swift, final judgement upon those who revel in cruelty and corruption.

  • Walk the Night. Stand watch where others fear to tread, striking from shadow so others may live in light.

  • Bear the Burden. Accept the weight of every life spared and every soul ended, never turning away from that cost.

Level 3: Oath Spells

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed below. These spells are always prepared for you and don’t count against the number of paladin spells you can prepare. They count as paladin spells for you.

  • 3rd Level: disguise self, sanctuary

  • 5th Level: moonbeam, pass without trace

  • 9th Level: fear, revivify

  • 13th Level: greater invisibility, death ward

  • 17th Level: hold monster, commune

Moonlit Stealth

You learn to walk the knife’s edge between shadow and light.

You gain proficiency in the Stealth skill. If you already have proficiency in Stealth, you instead gain proficiency in Insight, Perception, or Persuasion (your choice).

In addition, while you are in dim light or darkness, you can take the Hide action as a bonus action on your turn.

Aura of Twilight Paths

Starting at 7th level, you and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you move as if guided by moonlight.

  • You and friendly creatures within the aura gain darkvision out to 30 feet. If a creature already has darkvision, its range increases by 30 feet instead.

  • While in dim light or darkness, creatures of your choice within the aura have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Shadowbound Soul

At 15th level, the shadows themselves recognize your soul.

While you are in dim light or darkness, you gain resistance to necrotic damage, and you have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.

In addition, you can step from shadow to shadow. As a bonus action while you are in dim light or darkness, you can magically teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see that is also in dim light or darkness. The first time you hit a creature with a weapon attack on the same turn you teleport this way, the attack deals an extra 1d8 radiant or necrotic damage (your choice).

Avatar of Merciful Wrath

At 20th level, you can fully embody the Moon’s Beloved.

As an action, you transform into the Avatar of the Moon’s Beloved for 1 minute. While in this form:

  • You shed dim silver light in a 30-foot radius and bright light in a 10-foot radius.

  • You gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed, borne by spectral wings of moonlit shadow.

  • You have resistance to radiant and necrotic damage.

  • You have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks, even in bright light, as shadows cling to you.

At the start of each of your turns, choose one stance: Mercy or Merciless. You can change your stance at the start of each of your turns while the effect lasts.

Mercy Stance

  • When you or a friendly creature within 30 feet of you regains hit points from a spell or class feature, it regains extra hit points equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1).

  • When you reduce a creature to 0 hit points with a melee weapon attack, you can choose to leave it at 1 hit point instead. If you do, the creature immediately falls unconscious and stable, and you or one ally of your choice within 30 feet regains hit points equal to your paladin level + your Charisma modifier.

Merciless Stance

  • Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, that attack deals an extra 2d8 radiant or necrotic damage (your choice).

  • When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can force it to make a Wisdom saving throw against your paladin spell save DC. On a failed save, the creature is frightened of you until the start of your next turn.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
