Artificer
Base Class: Artificer

Using The Magic Words To Wondrous Effects

The power of the pen is far mightier than that of a sword. Especially true for those who seem to always have the right words. Creation in the form of pen and parchment is how these Artificers express their genius. From their bookworm nature, they are some of the most literate, communicative and articulate people across cultures. These studious individuals will find reward for reading and understanding the fundamental applications of magic, allowing them to create new spells.

Level 3: Tools of the Trade

3rd-level Archivist feature

You gain the following benefits.

Tool Proficiency. You gain proficiency with Calligrapher’s Supplies and know three languages of your choice from the language tables in chapter 2. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of Artisan’s Tools of your choice.

Scroll Crafting. When you scribe a Spell Scroll using the crafting rules in the Player’s Handbook, the amount of time and gold required to craft it is halved.

Level 3: Archivist Spells

3rd-level Archivist feature

When you reach an Artificer level specified in the Archivist Spells table, you thereafter always have the listed spells prepared. These spells count as Artificer spells for you.

Level 3: Wondrous Grimoire

3rd-level Archivist feature

You have a special book that contains compiled magical research. Whenever you finish a Long Rest while holding Calligrapher's Supplies, you can use those Artisan's tools to create a magic book that can function as a spellcasting focus and allow you to pick one School of Magic. You can pick two spells equal to or less than your highest Artificer spellcasting level that are from your selected School of Magic within the Wizard, Druid, or Cleric spell list. While selected, you always have those spells prepared and they count as Artificer spells.

You can cast each once without expending a spell slot and without Material components (except Material components that are consumed by the spell or that have a cost specified in the spell when you cast it). Once you cast each spell this way, you can’t do so again until you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast these spells using spell slots you have of the appropriate level.

You can select one additional spell when you reach 9th and 15th level in this class. You can only have one Wondrous Grimoire and the book lasts until you die or attempt to make another, in which the previous one is immediately destroyed.

Level 3: Literary Expert

3rd-level Archivist feature

You can quickly read anything with extreme ease. You gain the following benefits.

Avid Reader. You always have the Comprehend Languages spell prepared and can cast it at will.

Comprehend Scrolls. You can use any Spell Scroll regardless if the spell on it is on your spell list. In addition, you can use your Spell Save DC instead of the Spell Scroll’s when you cast it.

Quick Study. You can take the Study action as a Bonus Action and have Advantage on the ability check.

Level 5: Articulate Linguist

5th-level Archivist feature

What you have to say matters in whole new ways. You gain the following benefits.

Multilingual Charm. If you and another creature both know a language that isn’t Common, you gain a bonus on Charisma checks equal to your Intelligence modifier with that creature.

Target Audience. If you cast a spell with a Verbal component, you can treat the spell’s damage rolls of a 1, 2 or 3 on the dice as a 4 and can target creatures even if you can’t see them provided you utter their names and they are within the spell’s range.

Level 9: Empowered Pages

9th-level Archivist feature

Your book becomes exalted with magic power. You can select up to two Schools of Magic from your Wondrous Grimoire. When you select a School of Magic from your Wondrous Grimoire, you gain a benefit from your selection while equipped with it.

Level 15: Signatured Legacy

15th-level Archivist feature

You perform a meticulous spell altering process to create something new. When you finish a Long Rest, pick one Artificer spell you currently have prepared. You can change the spell’s color, sound, smell, and alter two of the following spell’s features below. Whenever you cast the altered spell, you can always choose to cast the original version instead.

Concentration. If the spell requires Concentration, you don't have to maintain Concentrate on the spell. When altered this way, its duration is reduced to 1d4 - 1 rounds (to minimum of 1) or if you become Incapacitated, ending early.

Damage Type. If the spell deals damage, you can change that damage’s type to a different one of your choice.

Range. If the spell doesn’t have a range of Self, you can increase the range of that spell by a number of feet equal to 5 times your Artificer level.

Saving Throw. If the spell requires a saving throw, you can change the ability of the saving throw to another ability of your choice.

Shape. If the spell produces an area of effect of either Cone, Cube, Line, or Sphere; you can change its shape into a Cone, Cube, Line, or Sphere of equal or lesser size.
