Base Class: Bard
While some bards use public displays to show their craft, performances of dance, music, or theater that draws the eye, other bards prefer to stay out of the spotlight. Bards of the College of the Quill use either art, stories, or poems as their medium. These are no less captivating or moving, and while the magic woven by them may be of ink, it is no less potent. Bards of the quill may focus on exploring history in new, fantastical ways. Or they may weave their own stories from scratch. Either way, each story contains a bit of their essence, empowering their words with magic. You can now use any writing instrument as a magical focus.
Researcher
Whether you specialize in bringing glory to existing tales or weaving your own, research is a large part of what you do. You have spent hours researching past events, far off landscapes, or specific tools, weapons, or spells used by your characters. You have proficiency in investigation and one of the following areas (outlined below).
Main Character
Quill bards express themselves through the characters they create, prefering to explore the world through them. Starting at third level, as an action you can summon from your works a main character, who appears within 30 feet of you. This person steps into the frontlines of battle for you and aids you in your endeavors. The main character lasts until it falls to 0 hit points or is dismissed, or until it moves more than 120 feet from you. Your main character grows more powerful as you level. Your main character shares your initiative in battle. It can move on it's own, but will only take the dodge action unless you use a bonus action to command it to do otherwise.
Expanded Spell List
Starting when you choose this subclass at level 3, your writing has the power to determine and manipulate reality to an extent. You gain access to certain spells, which are always prepared for you. They do not count against your allowed spells per level, but they do use your spell slots and cast as any bard spell would. As you level up, you gain access to more spells.
Main Character- Will of the Author
At level 6, your main character becomes more powerful, and as the muses bless this creation, you can enact your will through your main character with greater ease. See the main character stat block for level 6+
Main Character- Character Growth
As you and your main character grow, your main character becomes a hero in their own right. They are no longer dependent on you to command them, and can make a multicattack. See the main character level 14+ stat sheet.
Expanded Spell List
At level 5, you gain 2 more spells for your subclass. These are always prepared and don't count against the number of bard spells you know, though they do use a spell slot.
Expanded Spell List
At level 7, you gain two more spells to your expended spell list. These are always prepared and don't count against the number of spells you know, though they do take spell slots to cast.
Expanded Spell List
At level 9 you gain two final spells. They do not count against the number of bard spells you know, and are always prepared. They must be cast using spell slots.
