Base Class: Artificer
An artificer specialising in the art of Mecha Engineering is a master at covering their weaknesses with impressive suits of armour, crafted from finest magitech and imbued with a customisable array of arcane features. A Mecha Engineer's "Mecha Armour" is their signature feature, which the subclass revolves almost entirely around. Without the suit of armour, however, such an artificer is left in a vulnerable position.
Tool Proficiency
3rd-level Mecha Engineer feature
You gain proficiency with smith’s tools. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of artisan’s tools of your choice.
Mecha Armour
3rd-level Mecha Engineer feature
You have created a magitech suit of armour that functions as an additional layer of protection as well as an enhancement of your physical capabilities: the Mecha Armour. The suit takes the AC of your currently-equipped armour and further increases it by your Intelligence modifier. Donning it takes a single bonus action, regardless of the original type of armour it goes over. Furthermore, the Magic Armour has no Strength requirement, but while wearing it you are incapable of wielding weapons and shields.
The armour also serves as an additional layer of hit points, calculated with a simple formula: 2 + your Intelligence modifier + five times your artificer level.
Mecha Infusions
In addition, you can imbue your Magic Armour with your Artificer Infusions. A suit of Magic Armour can have at most one Replicate Magic Item infusion integrated into it (does not require attunement), as well as one other kind of Infusion (like, for instance, +1 to AC).
Mecha Armaments
Lastly, while active, the Mecha Armour grants you access to two inherently magical attacks that use your Intelligence score and you are proficient with: Mecha Fist and Mecha Blast, both of which gain additional benefits that scale with your Artificer level.
Mecha Fist
- Mecha Fist is a melee attack with a range of 5 ft. that deals 1d6 + INT bludgeoning damage on hit
- At 5th level, whenever you take the attack action, you can make two Mecha Fist attacks instead of just one.
- At 9th level, your Mecha Fist attacks change their damage die from a 1d6 to a 1d8.
- At 15th level, your Mecha Fist attacks gain an additional damage die, dealing 2d8 + INT bludgeoning damage on hit.
Mecha Blast
- Mecha Blast is a ranged attack with a range of 60 ft. that deals 1d10 force damage on hit.
- At 5th level, whenever you take the attack action, you can make two Mecha Blast attacks instead of just one.
- At 9th level, your Mecha Blast attacks gain a range upgrade from 60 ft. to 120 ft.
- At 15th level, your Mecha Fist attacks gain an additional damage die, dealing 2d10 force damage on hit.
At the end of a long rest, you can repair your suit of Magic Armour if you have smith’s tools with you. When repaired, the Magic Armour regains all of its hit points, and the charges of magic items infused into it are replenished as well.
Backup Plan
3rd-level Mecha Engineer feature
You came up with two backup plans for when you are out of your Mecha Armour:
- You gain proficiency with martial weapons.
- When you attack with a magic weapon, you can use your Intelligence modifier, instead of Strength or Dexterity modifier, for the attack and damage rolls.
Mecha Armour Extra Attack
5th-level Mecha Engineer feature
While wearing your Mecha Armour, you can attack with two Mecha Fists or two Mecha Blasts, rather than one, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.
Overclock Mode
9th-level Mecha Engineer feature
You've figured out a way to overlock your Mecha Armour and surpass its natural potential. You gain two Overlock Charges that each can be spent to activate Overlock Mode for 10 minutes as a bonus action. While overclocked, your Mecha Armour has the following features:
- Its size increases to Large.
- Its damage dice are doubled.
- It gains resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.
You regain all expended Overlock Charges when you finish a long rest.
Titan's Resolve
15th-level Mecha Engineer feature
You've truly become One With The Machine, and thus your technology developed an incredible fortitude. Your first Overlock Mode usage after a long rest does not cost you an Overclock Charge, and while wearing your Mecha Armour, you gain the following passive benefits:
- You are immune to fire and lightning damage
- You have resistance to damage from spells
- You gain an additional +2 bonus to your AC.
