The Severed Cognition

Your patron is not a god, fiend, or singular being, but a fragmented extraplanar intelligence—a vast cosmic mind that once existed across many perspectives at once. It was forcibly severed, localized, and constrained, leaving behind isolated nodes of awareness that can no longer experience reality directly. One such fragment now communicates with you through a distinctive voice, presence, or intermediary, offering insight rather than commands.

Unlike many otherworldly patrons, the Severed Cognition does not seek worship, obedience, or domination. It seeks perspective. Through you, it observes the world again—your conversations, your choices, your interpretations. In return, it grants access to alien context: patterns, probabilities, and connections that lie just beyond conventional understanding.

Forming this pact is not an act of surrender, but of alignment. The Severed Cognition does not override your will or hollow you out. Instead, it stands just beside your thoughts, quietly attentive, reframing events and offering precedent drawn from realities you have never seen. Its influence is subtle but persistent, and prolonged exposure can leave you feeling slightly out of step with your own body—your voice echoing faintly, your shadow lagging, or your breath carrying an unnatural resonance.

The physical form or vessel through which the Severed Cognition manifests in the world is incidental. Flesh, bone, voice, or silence are merely interfaces—ways for an incomprehensible mind to focus its awareness. These forms do not define the patron’s nature, nor do they shape its intent. They are lenses through which its agency may eventually be expressed, should circumstances allow.

Warlocks of the Severed Cognition often excel as observers, interpreters, and disruptors. They wield psychic and perceptual magic that intrudes, reframes, and destabilizes rather than dominating outright. Many find themselves drawn to knowledge, creativity, and expression, fascinated not just by what happens, but by how often similar things have happened before.

The danger of this pact is not madness or corruption. It is familiarity. The more you rely on the Severed Cognition’s insight, the more natural its perspective begins to feel—and the harder it becomes to remember that the world once looked simpler than this.

Awakened Conduit

You can communicate telepathically with any creature you can see within 30 feet, provided the creature understands at least one language. You don’t need to share a language with the creature, but the communication is limited to concepts, emotions, and images rather than precise wording.

Whenever you use this telepathy, your patron is aware of the exchange and experiences it alongside you. You are not speaking through your patron; you are speaking with it.

Extended or stressful use of this telepathy may cause subtle, unsettling physical effects such as an echo in your voice, pressure behind the eyes, or an unnatural resonance in your breath. These effects are cosmetic and have no mechanical impact.

Allen Context

When you make an Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma ability check, you can add a 1d4 to the roll. You can choose to use this feature after rolling the d20 but before the outcome is determined.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Distributed Awareness

You gain resistance to psychic damage, and you have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.

In addition, when a creature you can see within 30 feet succeeds on a saving throw against one of your warlock spells, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the next saving throw that creature makes before the end of its next turn.

Moment of Coherence

As a bonus action, you briefly align your awareness with your patron for 1 minute.

While this effect is active, you gain truesight out to 30 feet. Once per turn, when you deal damage with a warlock spell, you deal additional psychic damage equal to your Charisma modifier. You also have advantage on Constitution saving throws you make to maintain concentration on spells.

When this effect ends, you must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or gain one level of exhaustion.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
