Base Class: Wizard
Mystical Cardcasters are chosen by a bound deck of enchanted tarot cards known as the Clow Cards. These cards are not ordinary spells written on parchment. Each one contains a living fragment of primal magic, shaped into a spirit, force, or elemental presence. Those who form a bond with the deck do not simply cast spells. They release the power sealed within each card and allow it to take form in the world.
A Cardcaster’s magic is instinctive and deeply personal. Like a sorcerer, their power flows from an inner connection rather than strict academic study. The cards respond to intent and emotion, answering the call of their wielder with fire, wind, water, earth, silence, light, or transformation. When summoned, these forces may manifest as elemental bursts, protective barriers, or celestial beings that act in service of the caster’s will.
Over time, the bond between Cardcaster and deck grows stronger. Cards awaken hidden strength as their wielder gains experience, revealing new abilities and greater control over the primal forces they contain. The relationship is mutual. The caster guides the cards, and the cards shape the caster in return.
Those who walk this path often feel a sense of duty tied to their deck. The magic within the cards carries a natural balance, and Cardcasters are drawn toward disturbances in that balance. Whether they seek harmony, power, or understanding, Mystical Cardcasters stand apart from traditional wizards. They are living conduits of sealed magic, guardians of ancient forces, and wielders of a deck that holds wonders far beyond ordinary spellcraft.
Sealed Tarot Deck
You bind yourself to a mystical deck of enchanted cards. These cards serve as conduits of primal arcane forces.
You gain a pool of Astral Points equal to your Wizard level + your Intelligence modifier (minimum of 1). You regain all expended Astral Points when you finish a long rest. When you finish a short rest, you regain a number of Astral Points equal to half your Wizard level (rounded down).
As an action, you can expend Astral Points to release a Card. Choose a spell of 1st level or higher that you have prepared. The spell is cast without verbal or material components, and the manifestation appears as a summoned spirit or elemental force. If the spell requires concentration, the summoned Card persists for up to 1 minute.
You can only have one Card active at a time.
Cardcaster's Bond
At 2nd level, you forge a magical connection with your enchanted tarot deck, treating it as a living extension of your spellcasting.
-
You can use your deck of cards as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells.
-
You gain proficiency in the Arcana skill. If you are already proficient, you instead gain proficiency in one other Intelligence-based skill of your choice.
-
When you finish a long rest, you may replace one wizard spell you have prepared with another spell from the wizard spell list. This represents the shifting will of your deck guiding your magic.
The deck is bound to you. If it is lost or destroyed, you can perform a 1-hour ritual during a long rest to restore or reform it.
Double Release
Beginning at 6th level, you can release two Cards in rapid succession.
When you use Sealed Tarot Deck, you may expend Astral Points equal to the level of a second prepared spell to cast it as part of the same action.
If both spells require concentration, their duration becomes 5 rounds instead of 1 minute.
Once you use this feature, you cannot do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
Card Empowerment
While a Card is active, you gain the following benefits:
-
When you cast a spell on your turn that deals damage, you add your proficiency bonus to one damage roll of that spell.
-
If a spell you cast summons or creates a creature, that creature gains temporary hit points equal to your Wizard level when it appears.
-
At the end of a long rest, choose one of the following damage types: acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder. You gain resistance to the chosen damage type until the end of your next long rest.
Triple Release
At 14th level, you can unleash the full potential of your deck.
When you use Sealed Tarot Deck, you may expend Astral Points to release up to three prepared spells as part of the same action.
Each spell must be of 5th level or lower.
If more than one of the spells requires concentration, their duration becomes 3 rounds instead of 1 minute.
Once you use this feature, you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest.
