Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

Wyrmbond Wardens are rangers who forge a deep and lasting bond with a young drake, fighting beside it as trusted companion, guardian, and hunting partner. This bond is not built through domination, but through patience, instinct, and mutual loyalty. Over time, ranger and drake learn to move as one, protecting each other in the wild and growing stronger through every shared trial.

For Achuak, this bond reflects calm strength, watchful protection, and a natural connection to the living world. His drake is still young, but already fierce in loyalty and eager to stand at his side.

Level 3: Wyrmbond Drake

At 3rd level, you form a magical bond with a young drake companion. This drake is a trusted ally that accompanies you on your journeys and fights beside you in battle. Its appearance reflects the nature of the bond you share, shaped by instinct, loyalty, and the wild.

Choose the drake’s essence when you gain this feature. For Achuak, this essence is Verdant, tying the drake to living growth, woodland resilience, and primal natural power.

Your drake acts on your turn. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but it requires your direction in battle and follows your commands to the best of its ability.

If the drake dies, the bond is not broken. You can restore your drake to life by spending 8 hours tending to it or reforming the bond during a long rest, provided you have access to its body. If you do not have its body, you can instead rekindle the bond at the end of a long rest, causing the drake to reappear in an unoccupied space within 5 feet of you.

Your drake is friendly to you and your companions, and its bond with you deepens as you gain levels in this class.

Wyrmbond Essence

At 3rd level, your wyrmbond manifests as a drake companion that fights beside you in battle and accompanies you on your journeys. The drake is a trusted ally, shaped by the essence of your bond and strengthened as you grow in experience.

The drake’s statistics are shown below. It uses your proficiency bonus in several places. Wherever the drake’s stat block uses your proficiency bonus, it uses the bonus shown in your ranger statistics.

Wyrmbond Essence. When you form a bond with the drake, choose a damage type: acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison. The chosen type determines the drake’s damage immunity and the damage of its Infused Strikes trait.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1d6 +2 piercing damage.

Reactions

Infused Strikes. When another creature within 30 feet of the drake that it can see hits a target with a weapon attack, the drake infuses the strike with its essence, causing the target to take an extra 1d6 damage of the type determined by its Wyrmbond Essence.

Bond of Fang and Scale

At 7th level, the bond between you and your drake grows stronger, sharpening its ferocity and reinforcing your shared resilience.

While your drake is present, it gains the following benefits:

Magic Fang. The drake’s attacks count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.

Empowered Bite. The drake’s Bite deals an extra 1d6 damage of the type chosen for its Wyrmbond Essence.

In addition, while your drake is present, you gain resistance to the damage type chosen for its Wyrmbond Essence.

Heart of the Wyrmbond

Description:
At 11th level, the connection between you and your drake becomes swift, instinctive, and nearly seamless. When one of you strikes, the other is ready to follow.

Once on each of your turns, when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, your drake can move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks from that creature.

In addition, the first time each turn that your drake hits a creature with its Bite, the target’s speed is reduced by 10 feet until the start of its next turn as the force of the wyrmbond hinders its movement.

This gives you:

  • coordinated teamwork
  • battlefield control
  • no breath weapon copy
  • a more ranger-and-companion feel

Ancient Wyrmbond

Description:
At 15th level, your wyrmbond reaches a heightened state of trust and power. You and your drake act as a single hunting pair, each guarding the other without hesitation.

While your drake is present and within 30 feet of you, you gain the following benefits:

Shared Guard. When you or your drake takes damage, the other can use its reaction to grant resistance to that instance of damage.

Bonded Ferocity. When either you or your drake scores a critical hit, the other gains advantage on its next attack roll made before the end of its next turn.

Once Shared Guard is used, it can’t be used again until the start of the next round.
