Base Class: Fighter
Fighter Subclass
Painforged fighters adapt instantly to harm. When struck, their bodies and instincts shift, unlocking combat techniques shaped by the damage they endure. To a Painforged, pain is not merely endured, it is studied, internalized, and repurposed.
Level 3: Forged in Pain
Level 3 Painforged subclass feature
Every wound becomes a lesson your body remembers.
When you take damage, you may use your Reaction, after the damage is resolved, to activate Forged in Pain, tied to the exact damage type dealt.
- You gain resistance to that type of damage until you finish a Long Rest.
- If the triggering damage includes multiple damage types, you must choose one of those damage types to which Forged in Pain applies.
- You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus.
- You regain 1 expended use when you finish a Short Rest, and all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
You also gain the following additional benefit based on the damage type. These benefits also last until you finish a Long Rest.
Acid
You know exactly how long it takes for protection to fail.
Once per turn, when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, the target’s AC is reduced by 2 until the end of your next turn.
Bludgeoning
You root yourself against crushing force.
You are immune to being knocked prone.
Cold
You slow your enemy as frost slows the world.
Your weapon attacks reduce the target’s speed by 10 feet until the end of its next turn.
Fire
You burn, but you do not break.
Once per Long Rest, when you would be reduced to 0 hit points, you instead drop to 1 hit point.
Force
Reality pushes and finds you unmovable.
You cannot be pushed, pulled, or teleported against your will.
Lightning
You move where the strike was meant to be.
As a bonus action, you may teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see.
Necrotic
You teach death itself to hesitate before claiming you.
When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, it cannot regain hit points until the end of your next turn.
Piercing
You learn where the strike slipped through, and how to repeat it.
Your attacks ignore half cover and three-quarters cover.
Poison
You purge toxins on instinct.
You are immune to the poisoned condition.
Psychic
Your mind reaches outward as others would recoil inward.
You gain advantage on Wisdom saving throws.
Radiant
You refuse to yield to awe or terror.
You are immune to being charmed or frightened.
Slashing
You read the arc of the blade the moment it bites.
When you make an opportunity attack, you may make one additional weapon attack against the same creature.
Thunder
You are unmoved by the force meant to bind you.
You are immune to the restrained condition.
Level 7: Lesson in Pain
Level 7 Painforged subclass feature
While you have resistance from Forged in Pain, your weapon attacks deal 1d4 extra damage. The extra damage is of the same type as the weapon’s damage.
You can instinctively read the flow of harm around you. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks.
Level 10: Reactive Exploit
Level 10 Painforged subclass feature
You gain a second Reaction each round. This additional Reaction can be used only for Forged in Pain or for making an opportunity attack.
Your body begins to anticipate patterns of harm before they fully manifest. You have advantage on initiative rolls.
Level 15: Stored Agony
Level 15 Painforged subclass feature
Once per turn, when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you may end one Forged in Pain resistance and associated ability to deal 2d6 + your Fighter level extra damage. The damage type matches the expended Forged in Pain.
Level 18: Final Lesson
Level 18 Painforged subclass feature
Your weapon attacks from Lesson in Pain now deal 1d8 extra damage instead of 1d4.
Additionally, when a creature causes you damage of a type for which you have resistance from Forged in Pain, you can use your Reaction to redirect that pain. Choose another creature you can see within 30 feet of you. That creature takes damage equal to the damage you took (after resistance), of the same type.
You can use this feature once per short or long rest.
