Base Class: Monk
Monks who follow the Way of Surging Spirit have learnt to harness the spiritual aspect of themselves and purify their own souls through combat in order to channel powerful future attacks. This purity of spirit is represented through Essence points; Essence points work in a similar way to temporary hit points where damage first removes Essence points before removing permanent HP. Essence points can be gained from and spend on various effects within this subclass however at any one time you cannot have more Essence points than your wisdom score, you also lose any Essence points you have when rolling initiative.
Level 3: Spiritual Purification
Whenever you make an attack on your turn you may forgo any numerical bonus on the damage roll to instead gain Essence points equal to half your proficiency bonus (round down).
When you use your deflect attacks feature, after taking any unblocked damage, you may gain an Essence point; if you negated all damage you may instead gain 3 Essence points.
Level 3: Surging Wrath
Channelling your purified soul to amplify your instincts and unify body and mind, you can enter a state of pure focus. At the start of you turn you may spend a focus point to enter Surging Wrath, a state which lasts for 1 minute or until you lose permanent hit points. While in Surging Wrath you gain the following effects:
- You have resistance to bludgeoning damage
- When you land an attack on a creature you may push them 5ft away from you (you remain inside their reach)
- You may add a bonus equal to your number of Essence points to any die roll you make
Level 6: Impervious
When you take damage from an attack that reduces your Essence points you may spend a focus point to reduce the damage by an amount equal to your monk level, you may do this as many times as you wish per attack.
Level 11: Superior Wrath
While in Surging Wrath you gain the following additional effects:
- You gain +1 to your AC
- You have advantage on attack rolls using monk weapons
Level 17: Inevitable
When you deal damage to another creature while in Surging Wrath you may ignore any effect that reduces that damage
