Base Class: Cleric
Ovates are seers - clerics focused on divination of future paths, and influencing those paths through sacrifice and worship. Gods who particularly value foresight, determining the paths of fate, tweaking luck, and divining the truth are most likely offer this domain to their followers, though some form of Ovate can generally be found within all faiths.
Some divine powers instruct that an Ovate should gather the threads of fate to themselves and hoard their knowledge for the sole benefit of furthering the god’s aims, while others encourage an Ovate to be more open with their gifts. Ovates can often be found ensconced in temples and serving as an Oracle, while wandering Ovates may take on roles as diverse as outspoken prophet, haruspex-at-war or hedge-witch diviner, offering divination into both public and private life.
The methods of divination used are immensely diverse, and depend strongly on the relationship between Ovate and Deity, as well as the desired depth and immediacy of answer. Some of the most common include determining the auguries of portents, prayers and dream visions, cleromancy - the throwing of lots, such as the knucklebones of sacred animals or drawing runic tablets; extispicy - divination of entrails of sacrificial victims; elemental divination through the shapes in fire, water, air or earth; astrology - divination through interpreting the influence of the outer planes; and bibliomancy - divination through the use of sacred books.
It is common for skilled Ovates to be proficient in several different methods of divination and to use them appropriately - a sacrificial ritual might take several hours to complete and interpret, while spotting a portent in the flight of birds may be rather more immediate.
