Base Class: Monk
Praying Mantis style monks studied the techniques, strategies, forms, and attributes of the praying mantis, applying these fundamentals to martial arts and using them as inspiration for their techniques. It is a style grounded primarily in great agility, continuous attacks, joint manipulation, redirection, and strikes to pressure points. Key offensive and defensive movements involve the arms and wrists, while the lower body is used mainly for agile footwork—moving in and out of range, repositioning, and maintaining balance—with attacks and defenses limited to short-range movements. Hand positioning resembles the claws of a praying mantis and is used for grasping limbs, striking, blocking, and parrying.
Level 3: Teachings of the Praying Mantis
At 3rd level, to use pressure points effectively, you have acquired knowledge of medicine and nimble hands. You gain proficiency in the Medicine and Sleight of Hand skills.
Level 3: Praying Mantis Style Adept
Also at 3rd level, using the Mantis Style in combat grants you the following benefits.
Pressure Points. Whenever you hit a creature with an attack granted by your Flurry of Blows, you can force that creature to subtract a roll of your Martial Arts die from the next D20 Test it makes using Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution before the start of your next turn. Each creature can only be affected by one instance of this feature at a time.
Aggressive Disengage. During your turn, if you make a melee attack against a creature, that creature can't make Opportunity Attacks against you for the rest of your turn.
Level 6: Medicinal Pressure Points
At 6th level, you have learned to use pressure points to beneficial effect. During rests, you can perform a special treatment on a creature during a Short Rest, or on a number of creatures equal to 1 plus your Wisdom modifier during a Long Rest. To receive the treatment, the creatures must also be taking the same rest. Creatures that receive this treatment gain the following benefits:
- When spending Hit Dice as part of the rest, the creature regains an additional number of Hit Points equal to a roll of your Martial Arts die plus your Wisdom modifier.
- 1 Exhaustion level is removed from the creature, if it has any.
- At the end of the rest, the creature gains a number of Temporary Hit Points equal to a roll of your Martial Arts die plus your Wisdom modifier.
Level 11: Impact on Body and Mind
At 11th level, your precise techniques affect your targets' nervous systems and minds. You gain the following benefits:
Enhanced Pressure Points. Your Pressure Points feature can now also affect Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma checks. Additionally, when using Pressure Points, you can apply one of the following modifications:
- If the creature succeeds on the check affected by Pressure Points, it takes Psychic damage equal to a roll of your Martial Arts die.
- Choose an ability score. For this use, Pressure Points affects the next check using the chosen ability score that the target makes within 1 minute.
Sensitization. Whenever you use your Stunning Strike on a creature, the next attack that hits that creature before the start of your next turn deals extra Psychic damage equal to a roll of your Martial Arts die.
Level 17: Debilitating Whirlwind
You have learned to execute the highest-level technique of the Praying Mantis Style, allowing you to strike multiple enemies and leave them momentarily incapacitated. As a Magic action, you can spend 4 Focus Points to strike rapidly within 5-foot Emanation that originates from you. Each creature of your choice within the Emanation must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 3d12 Force damage and, until the start of your next turn, has the Incapacitated condition and a Speed of 0. On a success, the creature takes half as much damage and, until the start of your next turn, has its Speed halved and can't take any Reaction.
