Base Class: Paladin
The Axiombreaker represents a dark divergence from the Oath of the Axiom. Whether driven by a cognitive rupture upon witnessing spellplagued mutations, or by the logical realization that the universe's ultimate end is decay, these Paladins turn their mastery of physics toward destructive ends. Instead of maintaining spatial equilibrium, they weaponize kinetic shockwaves, accelerate ballistic mass, disrupt molecular bonds with high-temperature thermal exchange, and catalyze the ultimate thermodynamic heat death of their targets.
Catalysts of the Fall (Broken Axioms):
- Shattered Empirical Truth: Acting upon unverified superstition, blind faith, or mystical prophecy without seeking empirical proof; or deliberately codifying and propagating mathematical or factual falsehoods for personal gain.
- Fractured Economy of Motion: Exposing oneself or allies to physical hazard driven by pride, anger, or glory; or committing acts of chaotic, emotional cruelty that serve no calculated tactical objective.
- Compromised Calculated Reputation: Intentionally displaying cowardice, weakness, or groveling before a hostile force, compromising tactical authority; or allowing sentimental mercy to dilute their calculated deterrent.
- Failed Risk Assessment: Hesitating to eliminate a high-probability threat due to personal affection or sentimentality; or wasting critical resources on low-probability tertiary targets due to personal bias with catastrophic consequences.
Restoring the Axiom: An Axiombreaker Paladin who seeks to return to the path of logical stability and reclaim their original Oath of the Axiom must purge the entropic corruption from their magic.
- Process: During a Long Rest, you can spend 1 hour in quiet meditation performing an acoustic and physical diagnostic on your own spellcasting focus (your holy symbol or emblem) to recalibrate your magical frequencies.
- Mechanical Check: At the end of the Long Rest, make an Intelligence (Arcana) check. The DC is equal to 10 + your Paladin level.
- Result: On a success, your physical scales align back in-phase, your chaotic features are purged within a certain time decided upon by the DM, and your original Oath of the Axiom features are fully restored. On a failure, the entropic feedback remains; you remain an Axiombreaker, but you can attempt the calibration again during any subsequent Long Rest.
History:
The origins of the Axiombreaker order trace to the schism in the Sunset Mountains observatories during the Second Sundering (1487 DR). While the orthodox Axiomatic scholars sought to preserve physical equilibrium against shifting planar boundaries, a rogue faction of sentinel-scholars confronted a devastating paradox. Observing that spell scars, planar rifts, and divine cataclysms inevitably accelerate universal entropy, these scholars underwent a severe cognitive rupture. They concluded that attempting to maintain perpetual order is a mathematical fallacy - the universe's true, final state is maximum entropy and thermal heat death. Abandoning their wardenship of spatial equilibrium, they weaponized their knowledge of physics: turning kinetic conservation into friction drag, molecular stability into atomic de-cohesion, and thermal energy into absolute cold. Today, Axiombreakers wander the Sword Coast not as defenders of divine or mortal law, but as cold catalysts of entropy dismantling complex physical systems, breaking down arcane constructs, and accelerating the ultimate decay of all matter.
Level 3: Axiombreaker Spells
You gain axiombreaker spells at the paladin levels listed.
- 3rd Level: Thunderwave, Catapult
- 5th Level: Heat Metal, Shatter
- 9th Level: Slow, Lightning Bolt
- 13th Level: Ice Storm, Wall of Fire
- 17th Level: Cone of Cold, Anti-life Shell
Level 3: Channel Divinity: Axiombreaker Options
You gain the following two Channel Divinity options.
- Friction Lock: You release a wave of high kinetic drag. As an Action, you force each creature of your choice within 30 feet to make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, they take Force damage equal to 2d10 + your Paladin level, and they are affected by Friction Lock for 3 rounds. While in this state, their speed is halved, and they cannot take Reactions as their physical joints and gear lock up under absolute drag.
- Molecular Dissolution: As an Action, you target one Construct, Undead, or non-magical object within 30 feet. The target must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, you disrupt its molecular cohesion: it falls under your mental command for 3 rounds (re-rolling the saving throw if it takes damage), or if it is a non-magical object, you structurally disintegrate it.
Level 7: Aura of Drag
You project an aura of heavy gravitational pull and kinetic drag. You and friendly constructs or undead creatures within 10 feet of you can add your Charisma modifier (minimum of +1) to melee weapon damage rolls. Additionally, hostile creatures treat the area inside your 10 ft aura as Difficult Terrain, as intense physical resistance restricts their steps. At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.
Level 15: Inertial Absorption
You master the redirection of physical force. You gain resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage. Additionally, once per turn when you take damage of any type, you can use your Reaction to absorb the incoming kinetic energy. When you do so, your next melee weapon strike deals an additional 1d8 Force damage.
Level 20: Avatar of Entropy
You project a 30-foot-radius sphere of absolute physical decay and thermal breakdown centered on yourself, which lasts for 5 rounds or until you are Incapacitated.
While active, the field exerts the following effects:
- Hostile creatures are Blinded by swirling atomic dust and have Disadvantage on saving throws against your Paladin spells.
- Hostile creatures take 2d10 Necrotic or Force damage (your choice) at the start of their turns as their cellular and material bonds dissolve.
- Once per turn when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can siphon their kinetic energy: their speed is reduced to 0 until the start of your next turn, and you gain Temporary Hit Points equal to the damage dealt.
Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a Long Rest, unless you expend a 5th-level spell slot to activate it again.
