Base Class: Paladin
Justicars are entrusted with the solemn responsibility of carrying out the will of a higher authority. They do not stand as judge or jury, but as the faithful hand that sees a duty fulfilled. Whether delivering a sentence, extending mercy, or securing those placed in their custody, a Justicar acts with unwavering resolve, ensuring that neither fear, deception, nor opposition prevents the completion of their charge.
Those who swear this oath understand that authority is a burden as much as a privilege. They accept responsibility for the consequences of the duties entrusted to them, carrying out each Writ with conviction, restraint, and unwavering purpose.
Uphold the Writ
Once judgment has been entrusted to you, carry it through faithfully. Your duty is not to question the Writ in the moment of its execution, but to ensure it is fulfilled without prejudice or neglect.
Temper Justice with Mercy
Authority exists to preserve order, not cruelty. Where mercy has been granted, administer it as faithfully as any sentence.
Stand Unyielding
Do not abandon your post, your charge, or those placed under your protection. True authority is measured by steadfast resolve.
Let None Interfere
Protect the lawful course of your duty. Remove those who would obstruct justice, whether by force, deception, or by fear.
Level 3: Oath Spells
1st Command, Find Familiar
2nd Knock, Misty Step
3rd Sending, Dispel Magic
4th Freedom of Movement, Resilient Sphere
5th Arcane Hand, Wall
Level 3: Writs
You are entrusted with Writs that authorize you to carry out a sentence, extend mercy, or secure a subject in your custody.
As a bonus action, you can expend one use of your Channel Divinity to issue a Writ to one creature you can see within 60 feet of you. A Writ lasts for 10 minutes.
When a creature becomes the subject of your Writ, it immediately gains its first Count. Thereafter, a subject can’t gain more than one Count each round, regardless of the source. Counts remain on the subject until the Writ ends.
When you issue a Writ, choose one of the following.
Writ of Execution
The subject gains one Count the first time each round you hit it with an attack.
- First Count. The subject takes force damage equal to your paladin level.
- Second Count. The subject has disadvantage on attack rolls against targets other than you.
- Third Count. The first time each round you hit the subject with an attack, it takes force damage equal to your Charisma modifier.
Writ of Clemency
The subject gains one Count the first time each round it regains hit points from your Lay on Hands or a spell you cast.
- First Count. The subject gains temporary hit points equal to your paladin level.
- Second Count. Attack rolls against the subject have disadvantage.
- Third Count. Whenever the subject regains hit points from a spell you cast with a spell slot, it regains additional hit points equal to your Charisma modifier.
Writ of Detainment
The subject gains one Count the first time each round it deals damage.
- First Count. The subject’s Speed is halved.
- Second Count. Your attack rolls against the subject have advantage.
- Third Count. The subject has the Restrained condition while it remains within 30 feet of you.
Level 7: Aura of Jurisdiction
Your Aura of Protection also establishes your jurisdiction.
When a creature of your choice enters your Jurisdiction for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, it must succeed on a Charisma saving throw against your spell save DC or it is pushed to the nearest unoccupied space beyond your Jurisdiction.
While you have no active Writ and have expended your use of Channel Divinity, you collect Signatures. You collect one Signature the first time each round that you or one of your allies within your Jurisdiction either takes damage from a hostile creature or succeeds on a saving throw against an effect created by a hostile creature. You can't collect more than one Signature each round. When you collect the fourth Signature, you regain your expended use of Channel Divinity and remove all Signatures.
Level 15: Resolution
You regain your expended use of Channel Divinity when a Writ ends with its resolution.
Execution. When the subject of your Writ of Execution is reduced to 0 hit points as a result of your Divine Smite, the Writ reaches its Resolution.
Absolution. When you use your Lay on Hands on the subject of your Writ of Clemency while it has its Third Count, the Writ reaches its Resolution.
Level 20: Absolute Authority
You decide whether the subject of a Writ can leave your Jurisdiction.
