Bard
Base Class: Bard

The College of the Resonant Bell is one of the oldest bardic traditions practiced within the Shōrin Dominion.

Its members are not primarily entertainers.

They are keepers of memory.

A Resonant Bell bard may serve as:

  • a clan historian;
  • battlefield chronicler;
  • shrine reciter;
  • duel witness;
  • funeral chanter;
  • treaty witness;
  • herald;
  • military cadence-master;
  • ancestral storyteller;
  • or traveling keeper of oral law.

Their art is built around a central Shōrin belief:

What is remembered correctly retains power.

Names matter.

Promises matter.

Witness matters.

A warrior who dies unnamed is diminished.

A treaty without witnesses is fragile.

A clan that forgets why an oath was sworn may preserve its words while betraying its meaning.

The Resonant Bell exists to prevent such erosion.

Where the House of Silk Lanterns trains bards to move gracefully through living relationships, the College of the Resonant Bell focuses on the relationship between the living and what must not be forgotten.

Origins in the Shōrin Dominion

The tradition emerged from several older practices that gradually merged:

  • shrine recitation;
  • clan genealogy;
  • battlefield death rolls;
  • legal witness chants;
  • military drum cadence;
  • memorial bells;
  • ancestral storytelling;
  • formal challenge proclamation;
  • and oral preservation of agreements.

Before written archives became widespread, many communities preserved important events through trained reciters.

A Resonant Bell bard might memorize:

  • seven generations of a family line;
  • the exact wording of a territorial compact;
  • casualty names from a battle;
  • the circumstances of a duel;
  • the terms of a marriage alliance;
  • or the ritual sequence required to appease an ancestral shrine.

As the Shōrin state became more sophisticated, these performers became increasingly formalized.

Some now work with:

  • magistrates;
  • noble houses;
  • shrine authorities;
  • military officers;
  • archivists;
  • and diplomatic delegations.

Others remain wandering witnesses who distrust official histories precisely because they have seen how easily records can be altered.

Philosophy and Doctrine

The College teaches four fundamental principles.

Memory Is Duty

Forgetting may be accidental.

Erasing is a choice.

The bard’s responsibility is to preserve what powerful people may prefer rewritten.

Witness Gives Shape to Truth

An event witnessed, named, and recorded becomes harder to deny.

Resonant Bell bards are therefore common at:

  • formal duels;
  • clan oaths;
  • military promotions;
  • marriage agreements;
  • funerals;
  • treaties;
  • and public judgments.

Sound Carries Courage

The same discipline used to preserve history can hold a battle line together.

Drums regulate movement.

Chants reinforce morale.

Bells signal order through chaos.

Battlefield Resonants are capable of turning Bardic Inspiration into almost military coordination.

The Dead Deserve Accuracy

A heroic lie is still a lie.

The College teaches that the dead should be remembered as they were, not merely as descendants wish them to have been.

This makes Resonant Bell bards respected—

and occasionally very inconvenient.

Visual Identity

Members of the College usually favor formal but practical clothing.

Common elements include:

  • lacquer-black or deep indigo outer garments;
  • white or pearl underlayers;
  • bronze or silver fastenings;
  • crimson cord;
  • small bells;
  • narrow ceremonial drums;
  • folded genealogical scrolls;
  • lacquered tablets;
  • calligraphy cases;
  • and clan or shrine tokens.

Their instruments are often less theatrical than those used by other bards.

Typical bardic tools include:

  • handbells;
  • temple bells;
  • war drums;
  • wooden clappers;
  • frame drums;
  • flutes;
  • recitation fans;
  • gongs;
  • or simply the trained voice.

Their symbol would naturally feature:

a suspended bronze bell above concentric sound rings, framed by a chrysanthemum or broken-circle mon.

Role in Aetheris

The College of the Resonant Bell functions primarily as a:

Support / Controller Bard

Its strengths are:

  • strengthening allies;
  • stabilizing morale;
  • recording enemies’ actions;
  • enforcing spoken terms;
  • protecting against fear and mental disruption;
  • and turning Bardic Inspiration into coordinated group responses.

It has less emphasis on seduction or glamour than the Silk Lantern tradition.

It also lacks the pure damage focus of more martial Bard archetypes.

Its power lies in making words, actions, and memory matter mechanically.

Bell-Keeper Training

You are trained as a formal witness, chronicler, and ritual performer.

Action Type: Passive
Uses: At-will
Duration: Permanent

You gain proficiency in the following:

  • History
  • Insight
  • Investigation
  • Religion
  • Calligrapher’s Supplies

If you already possess proficiency in one selected option, you gain Expertise instead.

You also gain proficiency with one of:

  • drums;
  • bells;
  • gongs;
  • or another ceremonial Shōrin instrument.

Perfect Recitation

You have Advantage on checks made to recall:

  • names;
  • spoken oaths;
  • formal agreements;
  • genealogies;
  • witnessed events;
  • ritual wording;
  • or the exact sequence of a ceremony.

If you personally witnessed a formal declaration, oath, duel, or agreement within the last 30 days, you can reproduce its wording with near-perfect accuracy.

Echo of Witness

You learn to bind Bardic Inspiration to something you have personally seen.

Action Type: Reaction
Uses: Expends Bardic Inspiration
Duration: Until the end of your next turn
Scaling: Improves at 6th and 14th level

When a creature you can see within 60 feet does one of the following:

  • hits with an attack;
  • succeeds on a saving throw;
  • fails a saving throw;
  • reduces another creature to 0 Hit Points;
  • or uses a class or monster feature you can perceive,

you may use your Reaction and expend one use of Bardic Inspiration to Record the Moment.

Choose one ally who can hear you within 60 feet.

That ally gains your Bardic Inspiration die normally, but may use it for one additional purpose based on what you witnessed.

Witnessed Attack

The ally may add the die to a weapon or spell damage roll.

Witnessed Save

The ally may add the die to a saving throw against the same creature or source.

Witnessed Failure

The ally may subtract the die from the next saving throw made by the witnessed creature against one of the ally’s effects.

Witnessed Defeat

The ally gains Temporary Hit Points equal to the Bardic Inspiration roll + your Charisma modifier.

Witnessed Technique

The ally gains Advantage on its next ability check made to understand, counter, identify, or respond to that feature.

Only one Echo of Witness can be active on a creature at a time.

Cadence of the Unbroken Line

Your performance can impose order on confusion.

Action Type: Bonus Action
Uses: Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest
Duration: 1 minute

As a Bonus Action, begin a rhythmic chant, drum cadence, bell sequence, or measured recitation.

For 1 minute, you project a 20-foot aura.

You must be conscious, but the effect does not require Concentration.

Choose allies who can hear you when they enter or begin their turns in the aura.

Affected allies gain the following benefits.

Hold Formation

They have Advantage on saving throws against being Frightened.

Measured Step

Difficult Terrain caused by creatures, rubble, shallow water, or battlefield debris costs them no additional movement.

Answer the Bell

Once per round, when an affected ally within the aura is hit by an attack, another affected ally within 20 feet of that creature may use its Reaction to move up to 10 feet.

This movement does not provoke Opportunity Attacks.

Rallying Measure

When an ally uses one of your Bardic Inspiration dice while inside the aura and rolls a 1 or 2, it may reroll the die and must use the new result.

You regain all uses after a Long Rest.

Bell of the Lasting Name

You learn the supreme art of the College: speaking a creature’s name and deed so forcefully that reality itself recognizes the declaration.

Action Type: Action
Uses: Once per Long Rest
Duration: 1 minute

As an Action, ring a bell, strike a gong, beat a ceremonial drum, or speak a formal name-recitation.

Choose up to a number of creatures within 60 feet equal to your Charisma modifier.

You may designate each chosen creature as either Remembered Ally or Named Foe.

For 1 minute, the following effects apply.

Remembered Ally

A Remembered Ally gains:

  • Advantage on death saving throws;
  • immunity to the Frightened condition;
  • and Temporary Hit Points equal to your Bard level when first named.

Once during the duration, when a Remembered Ally fails an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, it may choose to succeed instead if the roll failed by 5 or less.

Once a creature uses this benefit, it cannot use it again during the effect.

Named Foe

A Named Foe must make a Charisma saving throw against your Bard spell save DC.

On a failure, it becomes Bound to Witness.

While Bound to Witness:

  • it cannot benefit from being Invisible against you or your Remembered Allies;
  • it cannot gain Advantage from disguising its identity;
  • it cannot willingly move more than 60 feet away from you without first succeeding on a Charisma saving throw;
  • and the first time each round it damages a Remembered Ally, it takes Psychic damage equal to your Bardic Inspiration die + your Charisma modifier.

At the end of each of its turns, it may repeat the saving throw, ending its Bound to Witness effects on a success.

The Name Endures

If a Remembered Ally is reduced to 0 Hit Points during the duration but does not die outright, you may use your Reaction to expend a Bardic Inspiration die.

That ally instead remains at 1 Hit Point.

You may use this benefit only once during each activation of Bell of the Lasting Name.
