Base Class: Warlock
Become the Apprentice of an Arcane Master
Rather than seek power from a distant god or an otherworldly entity, you have sought the tutelage of an archwizard: a person who has spent their lifetime unraveling the mysteries of the Weave and mastering the art of spellcasting. . Your patron might be a royal court wizard, an immortal scholar, or a malevolent necromancer who guards secrets few others know. Your patron determines which secrets they reveal and which spells they permit you to learn, guiding your development according to their own knowledge, ambitions, and methods. Through diligent study and the power of your pact, you gradually learn to wield the magic they have spent their life mastering.
Level 3: Arcane Grimoire
Your patron grants you an enchanted grimoire and drills you on the vital importance of documenting arcane formulae. This book tracks your academic progress under your patron's strict supervision. Your Grimoire is an object that weighs 1 pound, contains 50 pages, and can be read only by you, your patron, or a creature that casts Identify on it. You determine your Grimoire's appearance, and you can maintain only one Grimoire at a time.
Starter Spells. When you gain this feature, choose two Wizard spells of 1st or 2nd level to be inscribed in your Grimoire. Each spell occupies a number of pages equal to its level and counts against your Grimoire's page capacity.
Copying Spells into the Grimoire. When you find a Wizard spell of 1st through 5th level, with your master's guidance, you can copy it into your Grimoire if it's of a level you can cast using your Warlock Pact Magic. Copying a spell takes 30 minutes per spell level and requires a number of pages equal to the spell's level. You must obtain your patron's approval before copying the spell. When you request permission to copy a spell, your patron gives one of the following responses:
- Approval. Your patron permits you to copy the spell into your Grimoire.
- Refusal. Your patron declines to permit the spell under the current circumstances. They might require you to demonstrate sufficient understanding of the formula or fulfil certain conditions before granting permission.
- Ban. Your patron expressly forbids you from learning the spell. You cannot copy the spell unless you persuade your patron to lift the ban.
The DM determines the circumstances under which your patron refuses or bans a spell, and whether your patron can be persuaded to reconsider. If appropriate, the DM may call for a persuasion check, setting the DC according to the circumstances and your patron's reasons for refusing or banning the spell. The DM determines the consequences of a successful or failed attempt.
If you don't have enough unoccupied pages to copy a spell, you can erase one or more independently copied spells from your Grimoire to free enough pages. If you choose not to erase enough spells, you can't copy the new spell. You cannot erase your Starter Spells.
Preparing Grimoire Spells. You can prepare a separate list of spells recorded in your Grimoire, up to the limit based on your Warlock level. At Warlock level 3 you can prepare up to two spells. The number of Grimoire spells you can prepare increases to three, four, and five at Warlock levels 6, 10, and 14 respectively. When you finish a Long Rest, you can spend 10 minutes studying your Grimoire to change these spells. They don't count against or replace your prepared warlock spells.
Grimoire Spellcasting. Grimoire spells count as Warlock spells for you and use Charisma as your spellcasting ability. To cast a prepared Grimoire spell, you expend a Pact Magic spell slot. The spell produces the effects of its base spell level, regardless of the level of the expended spell slot.
Replacing a Lost Grimoire. If your Grimoire is lost or destroyed, you can perform a 1-hour ritual to contact your patron and request a replacement. At the end of the ritual, your patron provides a new Grimoire containing all the contents of the lost book. If the original Grimoire still exists, it is destroyed when the replacement is created.
As part of the ritual, you must pay a replacement fee of 10 GP for each page occupied by spells you independently copied into your Grimoire, to a minimum of 50 GP. Your Starter Spells do not contribute to this fee.
While your Grimoire is missing, you can't use it to prepare spells from its archive, but spells you have already prepared from it remain prepared and can be cast normally.
Archwizard Spells
The magic of your patron ensures you always have certain spells ready; when you reach a Warlock level specified in the Archwizard Spells table, you thereafter always have the listed spells prepared.
|
Warlock Level |
Spells |
|---|---|
| 3 | Detect Magic, Identify, Mage Hand, Magic Missile, Shield |
| 5 | Counterspell, Fireball |
| 7 | Arcane Eye, Fabricate |
| 9 | Legend Lore, Teleportation Circle |
Level 6: Scholarly Intuition
Your master's teachings have sharpened your understanding of magic and your ability to adapt your studies. Whenever you make an Arcana check, you can add your Charisma modifier to the check. Additionally, whenever you finish a Short Rest, you can replace one spell you have prepared from your Grimoire with another eligible spell recorded in it.
Advanced Spellcasting
When you cast a spell prepared from your Grimoire that is lower than the level of your Pact Magic spell slots, you can choose to cast it at the level of your Pact Magic spell slots instead of its base spell level.
You can use this benefit a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Arcane Mastery
Your master's teachings now extend to the highest levels of Wizard magic. You can copy Wizard spells of 6th through 9th level into your Grimoire, following its normal copying rules except that these spells need not be of a level you can cast using your Pact Magic. You can't prepare these spells as Grimoire spells or cast them using Pact Magic.
Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can replace the spell assigned to one of your Mystic Arcanum features with a Wizard spell of the same level recorded in your Grimoire, or you can instead restore the Warlock spell you originally chose for that Arcanum. Your original choices aren't permanently replaced, and you can change only one Mystic Arcanum spell in this way per Long Rest.
