Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

The Drake Knight subclass assumes that the Guard Drake creature type is either a naturally reproducing species, or that the knight managed to acquire the dragon scales and materials mecessary to create one.

Drake Knights are a subclass intended to appeal to players who like the idea of playing a dragon rider and provide them an aesthetically similar alternative while lessening the impact such a character would have on the importance and danger of dragons in the setting, and the work the DM would have to put into balancing for it.  Drake Knights early on are supposed to feel like a rider and mount growing in cooperation.  Later levels will include upgrades to the mount to make it feel more like a dragon and keep it relevant against stronger enemies.

Rider Drake

At 3rd level, you can perform a ritual by spending 8 hours of work, 50 gold pieces worth of rare chemicals and 1 pound of dragon scales, which you've had since the beginning of your journey in preparation for this. At the end of the 8 hours you create a Guard Drake to serve as your companion, using the stat block of the Guard Drake and any of its variants from Volo's Guide to Monsters. You can only have one Drake that benefits from your Bonded for Battle feature at a time. If your drake is ever slain, you can magically resurrect it by spending 4 hours of work, rare chemicals, and 1 pound of its scales, or a piece of it's body calling forth it's spirit and creating a new body for it.

Drake Knight Training

At 3rd level you learn how to speak, read, and write in Draconic.  Additionally, you gain proficiency in the Animal Handling skill.  When you use the Animal Handling skill against dragon-type creatures you gain double your proficiency bonus.

Bonded for Battle

At 3rd level, you magically bond with a Drake that is friendly to you, enabling it to be a stronger ally in combat. In combat, it moves and acts on your initiative. You can order it to move up to its speed (no action required), use your action to command it to use any standard action, use your bonus action to have it make a single attack with its Tail or Bite, and it can make opportunity attacks using its own reaction.

A Bonded Drake receives the following benefits:

  • The Drake becomes proficient in any saving throw you are proficient in.
  • You add your proficiency bonus to the Drake's Attack rolls, damage rolls, AC and to any skills or saving throws it is proficient in.
  • Its hit point maximum equals the hit points in its stat block, or four times your fighter level, whichever is highest.
