Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

Samurai begin their profession in service to a lord or master. When that service ends the Samurai has three options: find another master to serve, commit ritual suicide, or dishonor themselves and leave in poverty and disgrace with nothing but their weapon and the clothes on their back.

Most Ronin become wandering vagrants looking for trouble and libation. Some become peasant workers. Some continue the warrior profession as mercenaries, hired goons, or seek the life of an adventurer. The Ronin subclass is about these masterless warriors struggling to survive in a dangerous and unforgiving world.

Niten Ichi, the "two heavens as one" tradition, trains Samurai to fight with a weapon in each hand.

Disgraced

The word Ronin means "wave man", or one who is adrift, a vagrant. Upon taking the Ronin subclass you are looked down upon by everyone, including other Ronin. As such you have disadvantage on Persuasion attempts you initiate, but have learned to more effectively intimidate and deceive to get what you want. You have a +2 bonus to Deception and Intimidation checks.

Unarmored Defense

Upon losing your station in society and becoming a Ronin, you learned to survive with little protection from the environment. While you are not wearing any armor, your Armor Class equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Constitution modifier. You can use a shield and still gain this benefit.

Dual Wielder

You master fighting with two weapons, gaining the following benefits:

  • You gain a +1 bonus to AC while you are wielding a separate melee weapon in each hand.
  • You can use two-weapon fighting even when the one-handed melee weapons you are wielding aren’t light.
  • You can draw or stow two one-handed weapons when you would normally be able to draw or stow only one.

Onslaught

When wielding two one-handed weapons to attack more than once during your turn using the Attack action and your Bonus action you attempt to force your opponent back by 5 feet for each attack. The opponent must make an Athletics save with a DC equal to 8 + your strength modifier + your proficiency bonus to avoid being pushed back. If the save fails the opponent is moved straight back and you follow them, remaining in contact at the same facing. Neither you nor the opponent may make opportunity attacks on each other because of this movement, but third parties may.

Riposte

When you are wielding a weapon in each hand with which you are proficient and another creature hits you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to add your proficiency bonus to your AC for that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss you. If the attack misses you may make an opportunity attack against that creature using your Dexterity modifier.

Master Duelist

The unencumbered Ronin has honed their fighting prowess to the point where they can block and strike in a single move. The Ronin adds +2 to their armor class while wielding a weapon in each hand and wearing no armor.

Anticipate Death

The Ronin enters combat expecting to die, and that is why he lives. Every time you slay an opponent you may use your reaction to heal using one of your hit dice plus your constitution modifier.
