Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

Samurai begin their profession in service to a lord or master. When that service ends the Samurai has three options: find another master to serve, commit ritual suicide, or dishonor themselves and leave in poverty and disgrace with nothing but their weapon and the clothes on their back.

Most Ronin become wandering vagrants looking for trouble and libation. Some become peasant workers. Some continue the warrior profession as mercenaries, hired goons, or seek the life of an adventurer. The Ronin subclass is about these masterless warriors struggling to survive in a dangerous and unforgiving world.

Ronin who focus on the use of Naganita spend their days mastering the use of polearms.

Disgraced

The word Ronin means "wave man", or one who is adrift, a vagrant. Upon taking the Ronin subclass you are looked down upon by everyone, including other Ronin. As such you have disadvantage on Persuasion attempts you initiate, but have learned to more effectively intimidate and deceive to get what you want. You have a +2 bonus to Deception and Intimidation checks.

Unarmored Defense

Upon losing your station in society and becoming a Ronin, you learned to survive with little protection from the environment. While you are not wearing any armor, your Armor Class equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Constitution modifier. You can use a shield and still gain this benefit.

Wood Is Better Than Steel

You gain the following benefits:

  • With a quarterstaff or spear you can make an extended one-handed thrust giving you Reach. This exposes you to an opportunity attack if you are within melee range of an adversary. You may perform this maneuver once per round.
  • When you take the Attack action and attack with only a glaive, halberd, quarterstaff, or spear, you can use a bonus action to make a melee attack with the opposite end of the weapon. This attack uses the same ability modifier as the primary attack. The weapon’s damage die for this attack is a d4, and it deals bludgeoning damage.
  • While you are wielding a glaive, halberd, pike, quarterstaff, or spear, other creatures provoke an opportunity attack from you when they enter the reach you have with that weapon.

Set Defense

By firmly planting the butt of your polearm into the ground any opportunity attack you make against a larger opponent entering your reach results in a critical hit if your attack succeeds. Set Defense cannot be used with a spear or quarterstaff.

Pack Tactics

A Ronin of the Naganita tradition has advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of the Ronin’s allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn’t incapacitated.

Sweeping Strike

Making a broad sweep with your weapon you can strike multiple enemies. As an action make one attack roll for each target, up to five targets who are at your maximum melee range. Enemies within 5 feet of you who are not attacked may make an opportunity attack against you.

Anticipate Death

The Ronin enters combat expecting to die, and that is why he lives. Every time you slay an opponent you may use your reaction to heal using one of your hit dice plus your constitution modifier.
