Base Class: Fighter
A soldier sworn to defend his brothers and sisters in arms. A remorseful warrior sworn to never raise a blade again, called to battle once more. A young squire without a sword. These are all fighters who might be shield champions.
Shield Combatant
When you choose this martial archetype at 3rd level, the offensive power of shields becomes apparent to you. Your shields are now considered melee weapons for you, which you are proficient with. These weapons deal 1d8 Bludgeoning damage and add your Strength modifier to their attack and damage rolls. In addition shields you wield gain the trown property. with a range of 15ft|25ft. You do not gain the AC benefit of a second shield should you chose to wield two.
At 5th level, a shield champion can throw a shield so it ricochets off their target (and possibly other solid objects) to return to them at the end of your attack. This ability functions whether or not the shield champion hits your opponent or moves on your turn. The shield deals no damage to targets it bounces off other than the original target of the shield champion’s attack.
If the shield you are using is enchanted, melee attacks with it count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage
Shield Bash
Starting at 7th Level, if you move at least 10ft on your turn before your first attack with a shield, you can attempt to knock the target prone. If your attack hits, the target must make a DC (8+Strength Modifier+Proficiency Bonus) Strength save or be knocked prone. This attack deals an extra 1d8 weapon damage.
Shield Mastery
Upon reaching 10th level, you have begun to master how angling a shield has been able to increase it's effectiveness and allow you to block even more numerous and powerful attacks. Whenever a creature hits you with a melee attack and you are wielding a shield, you can use your reaction to add your proficiency bonus to your AC until the start of your next turn, potentially causing the attack to miss you.
You can use this feature up to 3 times. You regain all uses of this feature upon completing a short rest.
Redirect Attacks
At 15th level, When a weapon attack misses you while you are holding a shield, you can spend your reaction to redirect the attack towards a creature within 5ft of you. Make an attack roll on that creature, using your strength modifier and proficiency bonus. The damage uses the damage dice of the weapon attack plus your strength modifier.
Quick Reflexes
Starting at 18th level, when you use your reaction to make an attack of oppertunity, or use one of your shield champion features, you can make one additional weapon attack on a creature within 5ft of you.
