Monk
Base Class: Monk

Monks of the way of retribution are said to never strike first. They prefer to wait for their enemy to attack, and then return the damage.

Retributive Techniques

Starting when you take this tradition at 3rd level, you learn new ways to use your defensive skills. On your turn during a round after you used Patient Defense, you can choose one creature that attacked you during it. You can impose one of the following on said creature:

  • Gain one advantage roll for any action you take against your chosen target.
  • Recover the ki used for Patient Defense to use against the chosen target.
  • The target creature now has disadvantage on attack rolls for creatures other than you. In addition, you may give it advantage on attack rolls against you.
  • You can spend a reaction to direct missed attacks from that creature directed at you toward one of your enemies within 5 feet of you and within its threatened range.

All benefits granted by this disappear at the start of your next turn.

Counterattack

Beginning at 6th level, you can strike at the same time as the enemy in order to use their power against them. Whenever a creature that you can see hits you with a melee attack, you may spend one ki point and your reaction to make your own melee attack against them before the damage is rolled.

For this attack, you use the damage die of the opposing creature’s attack. If the opponent is stunned or killed by your attack, you take no damage. If not, resolve the triggering attack’s damage as normal.

At 15th level, your Counterattack now deals one extra martial arts die in damage.

Sharpened Insight

At 11th level, your experience has made you a far more discerning individual. When you make a Wisdom ability check, you may expend one ki point to grant yourself advantage on the check.

Enhanced Counterattack

Starting at 17th level, you can spend an additional ki point to use Counterattack against missed attacks as well as those that hit. You can also spend 2 ki points to redirect any attack, missed or otherwise, at a target within 5 feet of you and within the original attacker’s threatened range.
