Barbarian
Base Class: Barbarian

At first, it seems like a contradiction -- an arcane spellcaster that "loses themself" in a blind fury. Yet, the rage mage makes for an interesting case, since their approach to magic is based on the primal passion of magic more than the studious quasi-scientific approach. The rage mage is sure to enliven any campaign, because it raises fascinating questions on the true nature of magic and magic use. But don't ask the rage mage to answer those questions themself -- they're not interested in the "why," only the results.

A rage mage taps into the primal essence of magic, using their own natural anger and frenzy to channel the arcane power in flashy, flamboyant ways. Like the barbarian, the rage mage is often the product of a less civilized society. All rage mages must have at least some background as a barbarian, as well as training as a wizard, sorcerer, or -- very rarely -- a bard.

Spellcasting

Spellcasting origin

You choose what type of spellcaster your spells come from. When you choose this subclass at 3rd level choose Bard, Druid, Sorcerer, or Wizard.

Cantrips

You learn two cantrips of your choice from the chosen spell list. You learn an additional cantrip of your choice at 10th level.

Spell Slots

The Rage Mage Spellcasting table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.

For example, if you know the 1st-level spell shield and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast shield using either slot.

Spells Known of 1st-Level and Higher

You know three 1st-level wizard spells of your choice, two of which you must choose from the abjuration and transmutation spells on your spellcasters spell list.

The Spells Known column of the Rage Mage Spellcasting table shows when you learn more spells of 1st level or higher. Each of these spells must be an abjuration or transmutation spell of your choice, and must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For instance, when you reach 7th level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.

The spells you learn at 8th, 14th, and 20th level can come from any school of magic.

Whenever you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the spells you know with another spell of your choice from your spellcasters spell list. The new spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots, and it must be an abjuration or transmutation spell, unless you’re replacing the spell you gained at 3rd, 8th, 14th, or 20th level from any school of magic.

Spellcasting Ability

You use the spellcasting ability of your chosen spellcaster, you learn your spells through channeling your rage. You use your chosen classes spellcasting ability whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your chosen classes modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your chosen ability modifier

Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your chosen ability modifier

Bonus Proficiencies

When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with the Arcana skill and have advantage on Arcana checks while raging

Spell Rage

While you are raging you are able to cast spells. It takes a lot of focus to cast spells while raging though. While you are raging you can only cast spells with a casting time of no more than one action. In or to cast the spell you must also make a concentration check equal to 10+ the spells level. You are still however unable to concentrate on spells.

Rage Focus

You have honed the art of casting spells while raging. You can now cast spells that require concentration. If you are cast a spell that requires concentration, you must make a concentration check of 10+ the spells level at the end of subsequent turns to maintain it.

Spell Fury

You become more efficient with casting spells while raging. When you take the attack action while raging you are able to cast a spell that has casting time of 1 action as a bonus action. You can do this a number of times equal to your spellcasting ability modifier. You regain all uses after a long rest.

Warrior Cry

When you rage you can choose to gain the benefits of the Tenser's Transformation spell for the duration of your rage without concentration. Once you use this feature you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest.
